Opinions on engine set-up
I need some opinions. I have a stock 1990 lx hatch 5.0. I am starting to put a lot of money into it and wanted to know what your opinions are on the things im going to get:
-Holley System Max Kit (system max II heads, 276/280 roller cam, Intake manifold, Roller timing chain, Push rods, Arp cylinder head bolts) -Ford Racing 30 lb/hr injectors w/ 70mm mass air meter -Holley 70/75? mm throttle body w/egr spacers -Ford racing Roller rockers (1.6:1) -Richmond 3.73 rear end -Tremec transmission 5spd. ( which one?) -Centerforce dual friction clutch -Longtube headers (what brand/size is best) -Off-road x-pipe(best brand/size?) I appreciate all of your input in advance.

That is a well thought out set up. I'm not sure about the 30lbs but the rest is killer. When done, you will be one happy camper. Get the TKO. Get MAC exhast. And sence money don't seem to be in the way, go with an alum flywheel as well. Once all this is done you will need some suspension parts. Either dragg or road, too much power on stock suspension will make your package seem to fall short.

Might also want to consider Kenny Brown sub-frame connectors to sure up your frame. We have all MAC exhaust with long-tube headers. All long-tube headers are fun to put in - the MAC long-tube headers are real close to the steering linkage and sometimes rubs. You talk to MAC they recommend replacing the motor mounts with Ford OEM if the header rubs linkage. The MAC has an awesome sound with the long-tube headers.
If you go with long-tubes - I would also suggest getting them Jet-Hot ceramic coated. As the MAC HTS coating starts to look bad after a year. Plus the ceramic coating keeps heat out of your engine compartment. |

i agree MAC exhaust is the way to go..get there long tubes and offroad hpipe and spend the extra $20 and get the coated ones..
as for the combo..id stay with the 70mm TB and go with a pro-m77 mass air meter and 24# injectors..24's should be plenty considering ive gone mid 11's on stock 19#ers... the tremec you want to be looking at is the 3550 and grab a pro-5oh shifter when you pick it up.. IMO i didnt really care for the CFDF2 clutch..once again the king cobra is goodnuff for 1.5 60ft on slicks going 11's just me but i stick with motorsport gears..for the price you cant beet it and ive never heards of a set going bad and some richmends whine eeven when setup right if you wanna go even fatser than loose the holly cam for a anderson motorsport..talk to rick91gt for info on Holly..hes the man for that hope this helps

I'm unsure about the MAC longtubes, but the equal length shorties are a pain to install. BBK makes good headers that are easy to install and look great. Which ever way you go, definately get the ceramic coated. I would go with the Bassani X pipe, but that's just me. That's what I use and I love it. I can't tell you the gain of the X pipe alone, because I put it and a bunch of things on at the same time, but I'm sure it is a noticable difference and it sounds great, IMO.

We have the same setup in my dad's car. With the "old" holley cam (the one with 107* lobe seperation) he ran a best of 12.6 at 107mph on ET streets. He had the holley kit, 30lb injectors, 70mm T-body, 76mm C&L MAF, FMS shorty ceramic headers, offroad bassani X, borla mufflers w/ turn downs., and 1.6 rockers.
We had some issues with the old kit, and it was replaced by holley, the new kit comes with a different cam (it has 112* lobe sep.). We then sent he kit to Ed C. from Flow Tech Induction and had the heads and intake ported, a new shortblock assembled with lightweight 10:1 pistons and then balanced and had a girdle added, FTI custom cam, TKO tranny, 4.30 gears, 31 spline axles, and 8 point S&W cage. We're shooting for the 11's, but we are still working the bugs out. So far it has pumped out 323RWHP, but its no where near its potential yet. We think we may have the cam degree'd in wrong, so we are redoing that this coming week, and the ignition needs some work, its cutting out above 6300. The car should go mid-high 11's when we're done.
