Default tach broke in 96 gt gauge cluster

My tach broke in my 96 mustang gt. Somtimes it works fine but other times it's act's like it's 30 sec.s slow or somthing. And other times it will just drop straight to 0. I went to my local ford dealer and they said it might be some sort of sensor that got interupted that goes to the crankshaft or somthing. I was thinking of just buying a new cluster but I don't know if I should go digital or what. I like to keep the car looking pretty stock inside and out. but if I get another cluster the milage will be off and I don't want that either. So how hard would it be to roll the miles. I realy don't know what to do or what would be the smart thing to do in the situation. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
MonroeGT
