I thought that by putting on a larger t/b, that you'd lose hp and torque unless your motor was modified. But in the Jan 2000 issue of MM&FF, they added a 70mm t/b to a 99GT and picked up 3.8 hp and 3.4 lbs-ft. Would I notice similar gains by adding a 70mm t/b to my 96 GT? Thanks!

That's a good question. If I'm not mistaken, the heads are quite a bit different (on the inside), but I'm not sure. The '99 GTs are really stout bone-stock. I'm not sure you'd see much if you haven't done any exhaust work, pulleys, etc. If I see anything in my back issues of MMFF, I'll make a post to that effect, and/or email you.

My mods right now are limited. So far I have cold air induction, Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. Pretty soon though I'll be getting a catalytic H-pipe, pullies, gears, and lower control arms. Thanks for the info 4cammer, let me know if you find anything.

Dug out my back issues of MMFF magazine (yeah, I'm sittin' at home on a Friday night!). In the December 1996 issue they test all of the 4.6 bolt-ons on a '96 GT. As I suspected, they got only a 1 horsepower increase with the 70mm throttle body. They say that the stock 65mm unit will be plenty sufficient unless you are going with a supercharger, then you'll need to upgrade. I say don't spend the money.

So, if you can get your hands on a December 1996 issue, you can read their results. Hope that helps.

Unless you are planning on some stout engine mods, the throttle body just isn't worth the cash for 96-98 modular engines.

Take it from someone that put one on, don't waste your money! I can think of a lot of other things that the $190 could have got.

hmm....i was thinking about adding a 70mm tb to my '95 GT. any suggestions on that? would there be any gains/losses? just curious cuz you guys were talkin about the 4.6 engine and mine's the 5.0. (i've already put pulley's and cat-back system on it, and i wanna put ram air kit on in about a month).

Back before this project began to spin out of control the first mod I made was a 70mm BBK TB and the MAF post removal modification. While I would agree that ther was no really noticeable HP gain it did seem to make the car breathe much better a higher RPM - seemed to make power a little higher in the RPM range - which is one of this cars problems. Stock it seemed to stop making HP after about 4600 RPM - Worth every penny if you plan to continue to Mod. as I did. Without a doubt, gears will give you the most bang for your buck right now.
