Tire Recommendation

Hi all,

I have 2 17x9 rims and I'm looking for some good tires for them. My buddy gave me a pair of the Goodyear Eagle F1 (275/40/17) from his Mustang Cobra. After speaking to my dad, he said that the Goodyear Eagle F1 is a very hard tire and not great for the drag strip. So, I'm selling them. Now, for my questions:

1) What is the widest tire size I can go with for a 17x9 rim?
2) What are some good tires for relatively inexpensive? (Kuhmos, Nittos, Sumitomos, BF Goodrich, etc...)

I want this to be a non-drag radial tire since I'll be driving on them all summer (dry & wet conditions).

Thanks!

Re: Tire Recommendation

They have a treadwear rating of 220, so I don't see how that qualifies as hard for a street tire. IMO any street tire is going to suck at the drag strip. If you want something much softer than that you'll have to go to a DOT R-compound which will not last very long (treadwear 60). I don't know of anything in between. If you just want Z-rated street tires the Michelin Pilot Sport is a bit grippier than the Eagle F1 but you'll pay $300+ per tire.

Re: Tire Recommendation

I agree if you dont want a D/R then the goodyear f1 are good tires

I want you to know just because its a drag radial does not mean you wont be able to drive it

I have the new m/t et street radials I have over 20 runs on them and 2000 street miles and almost no wear.

and the reason for that is when at the track there is no need to do a burn out to heat them up just a dry spin(1-2 sec) to clean them off and your good

then a again I have the 275/50/15

if you want traction at the track. I would keep the F1s your buddy gave and pick up some rims from a v6 and throw some slicks on them
