65 Wheel and Tire size?
I am looking for suggestions on wheel and Tire Size for a 65 Mustang Coupe? I am wanting it to stay pretty close to a Stock look but still put as much tire on it as I can? It is a V8 5 lug car? I want it to fit under the fenders with no jacking it up but still be as wide at the back as I can be?
Also looking for suggestions on wheel brands? I am not sure what they are called but am thinking about the 5 spoke looking wheel that I think came out on some Mustangs? I see them alot in pictures of classic Mustangs? ------------------ 65 Mustang Coupe (Wifes) Happy Motoring Big-D |

Hello,
I too have just started a few months ago on a 65 fastback. One of the first things was tires and wheels. I have P235/60R15 TAs on 15x7 American Racing torque thrusters. I think the pictures you refer to show the 5 spoker torque thrusters, although I don't think these came stock on any Mustangs. The suspension on mine is all stock. I don't have any problems with the front tires. The back tires hit the fender lip if I bottom out the back end. I need to have the lip rolled or cut or something. I can't say it looks stock just because the tires are bigger. I would probably go slightly smaller to avoid the rear fender problem. Kevin |

I have steel (stock looking) 6 1/2 X 15 wheels on the back with BFG 235/60/15 Radial TA's. That's the biggest tires I could fit. I did have to grind off those little protuberances on the inside of the fender well lip, but that was all. Doesn't rub now. Front is 6 X 15 wheels with 215/60/15 BFG Radial TA's. These work well on my '66 coupe.

Rev and Kevin Thanks for Reply!.... I think The two kinds of wheels I am considering are Called Rally Wheels And Magnum 500's? These are the two we are considering hard! I see these on Classic Mustangs alot! In 15 inche so far all I have saw is a minimuim of 7" wide. Did not know if 7" wheels will fit ok under the fender wells?

Big-D, 15X7 is ideal for a mild street driven car. I'm with you, I love the Magnum 500's on early Stangs. '66 Shelby GT 350 H's came with these (I think) and looked awesome. These are on my "future improvements" list.

For what its worth, a guy in our club has a set of repro 14 x 7 styled steel wheels equipped with 205-70-14 T/A's which he bought as a package from one of the mustang parts vendors (forgot which one) They look great, fit nice and do not rub at all in either the front or rear.

I previously ran 215/70/14's Firestone Firehawks. They worked well, but were not as big, of course, as the BFG 235/60/15's. I definitely like the 15's better. I also like the appearance of "big and littles". Of course, I'm an old fart, dating back to the muscle car era.
