Transmission problem
Hey all. I have a '96 GT and today I was driving around and it kept getting stuck in first gear up to about 4000. All of the other gears shift normally. What could be wrong with it? Thanks in advance.

maybe a vacuum??? I don't know much about the auto trannies...well, actually I don't know much about either tranny, but I do know that usually means a vacuum hose. Could be others, but that was my first (and only) thought.

What would I have to do to check to see if that's the problem?

Sorry man...beyond me. Ummm...maybe search for it on the internet, or your owner's manual. Besides that...you could pm 98steedagt, he's the only person I can think of off hand who has an automatic. Hope you get it figured out...let's us know if you diagnose it...I'm always looking for more stang knowledge.

First check your transmission fluid. Make sure it doesn't smell burnt, and is at the right level.
That probably won't fix it, but it will let you know if you are doing any other damage. Drive it by an AAMCO, they do free diagnostics. |

I checked the tranny fluid and it was ok. It was at the right level and didn't smell burnt. I guess I could still have it changed just to be on the safe side.

is it an aod, or an eaod, check your modulator valve if it's an aod , on the passenger side, it's a big round thing, -hard to desribe., should have a rubber hose on it ck the vacum from the hose. should be around 12 to 18 lbs i think, dont hold me too that , if its ok then it could be the mod. valve. just my.02, im a diesel mech anyway. ask pkrwud lol he will know, heck it may be 10 to 12 lbs, cant remember.:D

I took the car to Aamco this afternoon to have them diagnose the problem. The guy said that the transmission is suffering from early symptoms of transmission failure. He said that with the transmissions in these cars that the slightest thing causes them to fail unlike the trannys of old. He said that the only thing that could be done is to rebuild. So my question is does anyone know of any good shops in the Lexington KY, Louisville KY, Cincy area. They are wanting $1300 to rebuild my trans.

$1300 Holy Snikees
If you can do the swapping, heres what id do. Either look at rebuild trans from parthouses or get a core from a junk yard and have it rebuilt. Cores costs may vary. I can get 89-92 AOD for $150. I just got a small block C6 for $75.00. Heck, walk into a Ford garage and ask if any mechanic would it on the side. Either doing the labor and all, or just benching a trans for you to swap. Most guys around here will rebuild one for about $150 labor, bringing him the trans. Soft parts are $60-100. I get kevlar clutches for about $4.50 each, think AOD has 18? I grew up kinda poor. So I figured out other methods to save what little money I had. |
Thanks a bunch...I'll look into that.
