Post auto trans part in pan

i've got a '92 gt aod auto trans.I dropped the pan to change fluid and filter and there was a plastic part just sitting in the pan.It looked like an egg sitting on a thin stick about 3 inches long and the egg part had a o-ring around it.The trans was just fine before the service and is ok after.Any ideas?

Thumbs up

That plastic thing is a plug used to seal up the port where the oil filler tube goes.It gets popped out when the trans is put in the car and the filler tube is installed for the first time.

Thankyou very much.I wonder if it has never been serviced before or if it has did the last person just leave it in?Ahh the mysterys we get when we buy used cars!Sometimes i think a brand new car would'nt be any fun at all!

DOctor DeBo is exactly right, Ford still does this on new cars as well, i've done tranny services on new cars and have seen plenty with the plug just sitting in the pan
i guess it just keeps things from getting in the tranny when it is sitting on the assembly line waiting for install
