$ 229.00 to change the plugs! WOW!

I was at the lcoal shop getting the oil changed in my truck. I asked the guy what it would cost to have the plugs changed out in the BEAST ( stang ). He brought it up on the computer and the book says 2.9 hours labor ( 98 GT ) plus the cost of plugs = $ 229.00!. How many hours does it take to change the plugs? and are there any special tools / tricks I need to know? Also, do I even need to change out the plugs with 51K on the car?

Haha...don't do that...that's one of the easiest things to do on a car. Go out and buy you 8 plugs (non platinum) and new wires (9mm--they cost a little more, but they help). You can do this yourself, but BE CAREFUL. DOn't mix up the wires from the distributer to each cylinder. Do them one at a time, a plug and it's wire. If you mix them up, your cylinders will fire at wrong times. It should only take about an hour, but don't rush yourself. Also, don't sench the plugs in...just screw them in with your hand as far as you can, and then about a quarter turn w/ a socket. Any harder and you will begin to rip the threads.

You may have to move the intake tubing to get to one of the plugs. Luckily Ford was nice enough to tap the holes on top of the block and not way down on the side like the old windsor block.

I'll check it out tonight.

$229.00 for the freaking plugs?! Dude, do it yourself and save some money. There's no need in paying that much for a job that you could do yourself.

How in the world did they come up with 2.9 hrs labor... That's the biggest load of BS I've heard. A moron could change them in less time. I did a complete change on mine in 15minutes... w/o removing the passenger side rails. all you need is a U-Joint elbow on your wrench...

I tell you what,,, I'll do it for 100.00

Hey Surfbeast, the first thing I did to my 98 GT was a tune-up.

Tools: 3/8" rachet, 12" extension, a good 5/8" spark plug
socket, U-joint elbow.

Material: New plugs, wires, anti-seize.

Time: 30-75 mins.

Plugs three and four are the most difficult, this is where the u-joint elbow will come in handy. Take your time and do it while the engine is cool.

the only tuff ones to change are cyl.3 and 4 all the others are realy easy but you will need nuckle joints and extensions and length of rubber hose[fuel line]
and good wires will only cost you under 100.00 i have holley laser shot less than 50 ohm per ft thats good paid 88.00 for them and they are custom fit

and whats wrong with platinums

They offer no benift, other than they last longer. Regular copper plugs are more efficient.
