I just changed my oil and filter. After driving for approximately 1 day and allowing the car to sit approximately 1 hour, I rechecked the oil. It showed at the top of the full range. I used 5 quarts and a K&N oil filter. Therefore it is 5 in mine.

99+, takes 5 quarts, my manual say's 5, I put in 5 and the stick reads right at full. The differance between the 96-98 SOHC and the 99+ is probably the oil pan. If you put in 6, then I would drain a quart, as its better to be a little low then over filled.

Hey Bark!

Do you drive your with a cold engine?
Does it stay cold while you are driving?
Or do you drive with a warm engine?

Check your oil with the engine up to temp!
You will find it way over filled!
Oil expands when hot!
If you keep driving with it over full. The oil will foam. Causing lack of lubracation!!

Freddie: I checked my oil when hot, and the reading is slightly over full. Now based on the info I have (also see the ther posts) the dipstick cannot be trusted. I have been driving the car with 6 qts, dipstick reading slightly over full for about 3 weeks now, I wouldnt mind taking some of the oil out but just havent had time to go back to the oil change place, argue with the guy, tell him how to do his job, etc. He was defensive and very sure of himself when I debated the oil amount in the first place, and it didnt help my case when we called the dealer and they verified 6 qts. So basically I am in a quandry!

Bark,
I would take the car back to the idiot that changed your oil. Take your manual and show him what it takes. Who ever he talked to at the dealer was wrong. Also I would find someone else to do the oil changes. To take out 1 qt. of oil all you have to do is change the filter and not add any extra oil.

I put 5 in mine. I have used two different Valvoline stations and I had one putting in 5 quarts the other 6 quarts.

Needless to say the 6 quarts was way to much and ended up slowing me down in quarter untill I drained some out.

I just had it changed today and made sure they put in only 5 quarts.

My local Ford dealership put 7! in mine. I had to argue for an hour to get them to take it out....

This all sounds fanmiliar.

My 96 snake came with the manual saying 6.0 quarts. The information distirbuted by Ford to all the various oil changes via the Ford vehicle database said 5.0 quarts.

During a normal oil change, mine has always taken 5.5 quarts dead up to the full line.

As for dipstick problems on the 96, this is the first I have heard of that.
