will 89 octane still be fine to run in the car....or will i need to move up to 93?

The Deuce 02-24-2003 06:17 PM

93

My naturally asperated '97 GT runs fine on 89 octane with the timing st at 14 degrees.

Oh, i didn't see that you have a 75 shot of nitrus, 93 octane might not be a bad idea

How is it set to 14? T/a or chip? I have a feeling you are acutally running 10 deg if you're using a t/a and 89. The stock ECU will override the t/a if there's any knock or ping with a manual t/a.

If you've got a chip and no problems, consider yourself smiled upon. That's the first one I've heard of running like that.

I am running a steeda t/a, stock computer. I was not aware that the EEC-V on the 96-98 GT's was capable of detecting a knock or detionation. I thought only the cobra's came equipped with a knock sensor? or does the EEC-V on the GT's have another method of detecting detionation? I used to run 94 octane and I was told that that was overkill, and I went back to 89 octane, and didn't noticably feel any loss in performance. In fact if anything, i thought maybe a gained a little HP dropping my octane rating. I don't know thats just my seat of the pants feel, it hasn't been dyno proven.

just to be clear thats 14 degrees base timing (stock is 10) so 4 degrees of advance on the adjuster.

nitrous is gone....so no worries there.....i aslo thought that it was only the 32 valve motors that have the knock sensor?i guess i will just play it safe and run 93 even though gas prices are skyrocketing....hell the war hasn't even started

That was my understanding about the base chip. I don't have the time to look it up right now. Heck, I'm still at work. ugh.

If you're not knocking at 14 deg w/89 you would see more power, theoretically. Since 89 burns easier and a little hotter, it would make more power. That's why you use higher octane, to keep it from burning too soon.

Anyway, I'm going to eventually run 14 w/91 out here. If I could run 16, I'd do that, since I think 15 would be best. I'm putting in the upr t/a and bbk pullies this spring.

Something tells me I may have bought the bbks from somebody here?

jimbogt97 02-25-2003 05:02 PM

Yep, thats me :p

The URP adjuster does work with the BBK pullies? damn, i could have saved some money and I wouldn't have had to buy different pullies if i didn't buy the steeda t/a. I should have done my homework.

Another point... I just installed my steeda pullies and t/a a couple of months ago. With this damn winter weather we have here in Indiana,my car, with the timing bumped, hasn't seen any temps. above 35 degrees. I'll be the first to know if I run into any detiontion this spring and summer. I'll keep you informed if it ever warms up around here.

Enjoy the new pullies!
