Question the x/h pipe debate.

I want to buy an h or x pipe on my 97 GT but dont know which way to go. Maybe you guys can answer some of my ? First which will give me more power? What is the difference in sound? If I get an offroad, how do I make the check engine light go away? If I get one with cats, will the sound be different? Will the engine light still go off and will it pass smog with only 2 cats? Also, what brands do you guys recommend?

Cool

In a nutshell:

Hpipe = more low end torque
Xpipe = more power up top

Hpipe is generally louder than an Xpipe

If you go offroad you'll need MIL eliminators
try www.dallasmustang.com

If you go hiflow (2 cats) your CE should not come on and should still be street legal.

I'm going with BBK. From what i've heard, their fit and finish is the best.

Thumbs down

I have a FloTech off road H-pipe on my 2000 GT. I few fit and finish problems, especially with getting the driver side to seal at the cone on the manifold.

I just put a bassani X-pipe on my 94GT. The sound didn't change all that much with the stock mufflers, a little more throaty. However, coupled with BBK equal length headers and flowmaster 2chamber headers, I personally am impressed. It has the low, flowmaster tone down low, but as the rpms increase, it's got more of a roar. As far as fit goes, it fits like a glove. I haven't had it emissions tested yet, but a mechanic friend of mine in GA (where the car is regestered) told me not to worry.
