Default manual vs power steering shaft.

Whats the difference between the two?

Is there a way to modify the power steering shaft to work with a manual rack and pinion?

they use different flanges on the bottom side of the ragjoint. The splines coming out of the rack shaft are different size on the manual vs the power racks. You have a few options though. Flaming river makes an adapter flange that bolts to your stock shaft and allows you to use their manual rack or any the old manual steering mustang racks. You can also cut off the ragjoint all together and weld in a u-joint (also offered by flaming river, among others)
Or you could dish out the $180 for the full shaft.

Hope this helps,

-Drew

I made my own steering shaft using the stock shaft when I went to manual steering. I got the U joint I needed. The size for manual steering shaft it 9/16x26 spline. I cut the rag joint off and measured how long it needed to be and welded the u joint on. I also had to cut some off the tube that comes out the firewall so I can slide the shaft up in there to be able to get the u joint on the spline on the rack and pinion. It cost me 50 bucks for the u joint. That's all it cost me and 1 hour of my time. I go the rack and pinion from Advance Auto Parts for a 79 Mustang for $84 three years ago.
