Question Whats the diff. between 2.3 T-5 & 5.0 T-5

Besides gear ratios, how can I tell? I know the diff. between a WC & NWC, but not a 2.3. Thanks

i think the 4cyl T-5 is weaker than the regular....not sure though. help?

ya the four cylinder ones are weaker.....they look the same but have differences in meterials and sizes.....my transmission guy told me to watch out for them, said they don't work for v8s....don't know much more about them

The 4 banger T-5 is significantly weaker than the V-8's T-5. It also has a smaller input shaft diameter.

Mustangs came with 2 5-speeds (from what i can gather)...

one was made by Mitsubishi (i think),anyway, an imported trans.....

the other is a Borg-Warner T5, I think T5 is a trade mark of Borg warner....

the other is'nt a T5 only a 5 speed..

As the owner of a 90 LX 5.0 and a 88 LX 2.3 both with T-5's I can pipe in

Yes the 2.3 has a Borg Warner T-5 rated at 240 ft lbs similar to the older non WC T-5's The input shaft has the same splines but the pilot bearing shaft is longer and diff diameter. I have a printout for T-5 specs can't remember where on the web I found it. Some of the ratios are diff and it the shift throws are shorter. The input shafts could be swapped out, but don't expect it to last long behind a healthy 302, but should be a good swap for a stock 82-84 model.

Actually for a car that looks almost the same as the 90 very few parts interchange, hence it's for sale now instead of my original plan to canabalize for parts.

Chevyguy, so what your saying is if it came out of 5.0 it can't be one for the 2.3, right? I don't have a spare input shaft laying around to compare it to. BTW, it is a WC.

Also i'm building my dad's 454 in his 55 chevy this winter. Is your 454 built? We are planning on Edelbrock power package (w/11:1 comp.).

This is kinda foggy, but IIRC the 2.3 T-5 has the longer pilot shaft so that would bottom out in a 5.0 pilot bearing. I know the 2.3 bellhousing looks quite different than a 5.0 and different clutch cable setup. There are ID#'s on the trans which you can look up on the table I can't find right now. The numbers reference to the model year and trans type, IE 88 2.3 240 ft lbs capacity

the t-5 is rated at 265lb 25 more than the 2.3 one.

2.3 has a smaller diameter pilot. You'll have to either replace the pilot bearing or sleeve/bush the pilot to make it work with a 5.0 bearing.

The 2.3 has a much taller first gear too, something up in the 3.85 range if I recall correctly. That's part of the reason why its torque rating is lower.

It'll swap with the 5.0 without any problems, other than the pilot diamter. Don't expect it to last real long though.

I have used a bunch of 4 cyl t-5 in some of my project cars they will work behind a 5.0 cross member and all the only thing diffrent is the pilot bearring the 4 cyl t-5 takes a 202-ss &lt;--------- part number it can be found at any car quest these tranny's are not as strong v-8 t-5 they will work for budget build up's
