Question A few '92 GT Performance Mods Questions

I've had the '92 GT 5-speed for about a month now and I'm looking for some simple bolt-on mods that will not significantly decrease gas mileage (so gears are out of the question).

This is not gonna make a big difference, but I'll be getting an Aluminum driveshaft within a week or 2. The car has 167K miles on it, but was VERY well taken care of. It is totally stock except for Flowmasters (2 chambers). I was thinking about a rebuild, which would probably be best b4 modding it, but what would I be looking at for that? $800?

What do you think about these mods (considering gas mileage and streetability--- This is my everyday driver car and sees a slightly above average amount of highway miles).

1) Heads (which ones -- AFR 165s, TFS?
2) Cam (to match the heads)
3) Intake (TFS)
4) Headers (MAC)
5) High flow cats
6) MSD Ignition, distributor and coil.

I would like to set it up that later I could add a little boost to it, say from an intercooled Procharger blower at relatively low boost, ~6-9 lbs.

Let's say I'm looking for a 13.1 to 12.9 sec car in 1/4 (without the blower), with relatively good gas mileage and durability.

Oh yeah, and how do these 5-speed trannies hold up? Last night I was accelerating on the highway to about 100 mph in 4th and felt the stick shaking a bit more than I expected. Is that normal/common? How strong are the stock 5-speeds? I know they gotta be a bit better than the AODs.

I know those are a lot of questions, but answer whichever you can. This is the first time I've owned a 5-speed Mustang 5.0. My experience is mostly with my 351W-powered '79 backed by a C4, running low 13s. So you see the contrast in setup. Thanks.

The aluminum d.s. should smooth some of that shake out. It smoothed my whole driveline out a lot, but even when new the shifter will vibrate around a bit. If it has had an aftermarket shifter it's whole life and not abused it will be o.k. most likely.

Try pullies, yank air silencer, timing, new O2 sensors, an off-road h-pipe, and gears. Nitrous may be easier on the high mileage motor than a supercharger, since it is used far less.

Personally, I feel big cams, heads, etc. give up some to a lot of the enjoyment of driving a mustang at light-part throttle in a daily routine. I've had both and found the stock-type mustang w/ nitrous is more fun to drive in traffic, etc. and faster than most of the head and cam cars when on the bottle. Just an opinion.

i have a 92 with these mods and i get about 12-13 miles a gallon and is a daily driver in L.A.!


3:27 gears
bbk equal length headers
bassani x-pipe w/cats
flowmaster 2 chamber
mac pullies
bbk cold air induction
electric fan
a hurst shifter
and eibach lowering springs
and i get some vibrating in 4th and 5th gear...but i can live with it!

Thanks for the replies, guys--everyone. I am also looking at getting cold air induction. It has a considerable amt of miles on it, so I'm not sure if I need to get it rebuilt or not b4 I add all this stuff. Seems like if someone was asking me, I'd tell them to get the motor rebuilt first.

BTW, where is the air silencer and what exactly does it do? Also, how durable are the 5-speeds? Will I be rebuilding it soon?

I wouldn't worry about the T5 until the synchros/blocker rings start grinding or until you lose a gear. The T5's are pretty durable for street use. The one in my GT has been in use for 50k some odd miles and the previous owner said the previous trans was fine until he let his girlfriend start driving the car. All of the T5 cars i've ever owned have made tons of noise and i test drove a '95 GT with a T5 and it made a fair amount of noise as well. Unless you're using slicks you probably won't have to rebuild it for a long time.

AS for the air intake and silencer... if you take off your stock airbox there's a "thing" in the hole left in the fender... take that out... that's free power... though not much... but it's free...

if you got with a COLD AIR INTAKE like a mac or whomever it'll cost you around 100 bucks unless you get one of those cheapy ones off ebay, wich is fine too, but eitherway I would say your HP gain might be 1HP... cause your car comes from the factory with cold air intake..I mean... when you install those CAI kits, you're not drilling any news holes... that air was comming from there anyway...what you really do is... "theoreticaly" smooth out the air flow with those nice tubes... and clean up the engine compartment... witch is a nice feature and frankly is the biggest gain you get. Though with those metal tubes you actulay have parts now that absorb heat very well... some companies make those intakes out of a heat resistant plastic ...so you end up introducing heat to the intake path anyway.
