28/31 spline??
I have a question...does my stock 87 GT come with a 28 spline ring & pinion? I just purchased a ring and pinion set on ebay and was told it was a 28 spline but turns out it's a 31. Can I get this to work and with what changes? Thanks.....

Re: 28/31 spline??
mustang/ranger(4.0l) runs a 28 spline, explorer runs a 31 as well as fullsize pickups.
the "ring and pinion" should not be affected, as they are just bolted to the carrier, so im guessing you got the carrier as well?? if thats the case, just swap the ring gear over to your carrier, as far as i know, with the r&p it doesnt matter what spline your axleshafts are

Re: 28/31 spline??
You can also get 31-spline axles that would work with the 31-spline carrier if you were planning to upgrade for strength.

Re: 28/31 spline??
If your counting the splines on the pinion gear itself, you should be fine. Those splines are what the driveshaft yolk slip on to.
Now if you bought the whole carrier, and you're counting the splines on the side gears, this is where the axles spline count comes into play. Your Stang came with 28 spline axles, not 31. Not a big deal, many options here. Like was mentioned before, simply swap the new ring gear onto your carrier, and presto. Or, Strange, Mosier, and a few others make 31 spline axles that slide right in. They're stronger than stock, and almost bulletproof. Good time to upgrade if this is the problem you're having.

Thanks for your help. I didn't think it would be a problem but just needed some clarification on that. Thanks again.
