SCCA Solo II Racing
I just completed my first Solo II race in ESP Class. It was an eye opening experience to say the least. Too much HP and not enough traction. Anyone have any tips on suspension tweaks, tires and chassis upgrades? I plan on installing MM Sub-frame connectors, Shock Tower Brace, K-Member brace and upper/lower rear control arms just in time for the October 15 event.

I dont race SCCA, but get a rulebook, to see what/where you can modify (stay in same class).
The SCCA forums woukld be another advice column...

Thanks for the advise. I just applied to SCCA for membership. I have downloaded and read the rule book. Since I am racing in E Street Prepared, I can make any suspension, intake and exhaust changes, as long as I leave all the internals to engine stock. I will be upgrading my suspension and chasis bracing in the next few weeks. My next race is October 15th at the Aloha Stadium. By the way, this is where the Pro Bowl is played every spring.

Anyone have any tips on suspension tweaks, tires and chassis upgrades?
Ive run my 99 mustang in autocross four of five times this year(STX). Im dealing with a stock v6 with gt 245/45/17s and new bilsteins. Still pushes like mad! Ive talked to alot of people and maxing negative camber on the front end(via maxing stock allignment or max motorsport caster camber plates) and a stiffer rear sway bar should make a big difference. I also read a post recently that a super stiff front bar will help keep the negative camber you need to pivot in the corners but Im not sure i believe it though. Mine is a daily driver and im broke so Im gonna max out the negative camber on my next allignment-this weekend and install a GT bar on the back. Id appreciate any advise from the forum at large as to setup too! Ill let you know how it goes. |

Welcome to the heavy front end, high hp Mustang world!
You can try to minimize how much your tires roll over (roll off treqad and onto sidewall). You will see others paint white marks to see what is happening. Alignment can only do so much. Sure, see what you can maximize in negative camber. Swaybars may help, by stiffening the rear (making the rear tires support body lean, sort'a). Good luck. Sounds like you are addicted. Wait till you go out on a roadcourse once! Nothing like doing an "autocross" at 100mph!

Just completed some major upgrades to my 91 LX which include tubular k-member, with matching A-arms, coil-over conversion and a bump steer kit. Last December, I installed sub-frame connectors, cc plates and a shock tower brace. I will be doing the rear-end next. I hope to have the panhard bar and t-brace installed before the next season of SCCA races. Since this is a budget racer, I have budgeted my next major installation to include a Cobra disk brake it and a modified 8.8" Ford rear-end, with 3.55 gears. Hopefully, these modifications will reign in this wild pony. Yeehaa!

Nice "budget racer"... !!!
Not sure what you mean by t-brace (torque-arm?). Panhard is not well-compatible with stock 4-link. Maximum Motorsport or Griggs torque arm suspension is awesome. Keep up the good work, and let us know of progress...

I am getting ready to start my second season of SCCA Solo2 racing. I am racing my 06 Mustang GT with 18" wheels.
Last season, I raced in F Stock Ladies on street tires. Some of my competition had Kumho tires and generally were always several seconds faster. I have been getting conflicting information about tire size. I have been looking at Kumho V710 tires. They come in 245 or 285. My street tires are 235. Some racers are recommending 285s and my tire supplier is saying 245s. What is everyone else out there using? |

Tire Specs for Kumho Ecsta V710 Most (if not all) my friends run 275's and that is on Fox Mustangs. The SN95's and S197's all run 275's also, but sometimes 315 rears.

I second the above qote from Drudius. Everybody I know running a mustang, especially GT's is running at least 275's I suppose you just need more rubber on the road to put the power down! |
