Arrow Adjustment nut on spindle - what ft/lbs?

Hey guys. I'm wrapping up my front brake project and am curious as to how much I should torque down on the adjustment nut on the end of the spindle. The Chilton's manual says to spin the wheel backwards while tighting the nut to 17-25 ft/lbs and then back off the nut by 1/2 turn and then retighten to some low amount of in/lbs rating. This seems really weird to me.

If I tighten the nut to 25, the wheel definitely doesn't spin as freely as it should, so I just backed if of a smidgin (maybe 1/4 turn) and the wheel spins nicely, but there is no play in the wheel (back and forth). Is this the proper way to do it? I can't believe that this nut is the only thing holding the wheel on!

Thanks in advance for the replies.

E

Eric,
Ya..25 is a little tight. After I usually just back the nut off until it spins well and just slid the pin in.

Eric, Tomorrow after work I'll bring the compresser and the impact gun over. 2 ft/lbs does not sound safe to me! We will turn up the pressure on the impact and slam her home to about 350 ft/lbs. That should keep the wheel from coming loose...forever!!!

In reality, I'd do just what the manual says, torque it to 25 ft/lbs to seat everything, then back off the nut and re-torque to 2 ft/lbs and slide the pin in. I'll come over sunday to help bleed the brakes then it's time to start on the rear end! (man that sounds bad!)
