Default 1st Gen. Lightning.

I really like the original Ford lightning trucks and I am considering selling my CRX for down payment money.

How fast are they stock?

Is it capable of towing my 90LX on a trailor to the track on a regular basis with out any upgrades?

If I understand correctly they come with GT-40 heads and intake. So some bolt ons and a e-303 cam would work nicely.

Also they are Speed density correct?

Thanks,

I always thought they were mass air, but I could be wrong (it happens ). Try http://www.f150online.com/ . Their Lightning forum is by far the favorite, and there is tons of good info there.

Take care,

I also thought they were mass-air, but I could be wrong too!

Weren't they equipped with 351s? Those older Lightnings had real 'clean' lines on them.

I would think that it could tow your Mustang without any issues.

It'll definately tow your car with no probs. I have towed mine with my 4.9l I6 F-150. I am pretty sure they had the 351 in them, but I have no idea about the mass air vs speed density.

Ask me whatever you want to know. By the way, the f150online Lightning forum is pretty much strictly GEN 2s. They don't like us GEN 1 guys over there. Go the National Lightning Owner's Club for unlimited info on these trucks.

They run low 15s stock. Yes they have the 351W with hypereutectic pistons, 8.8:1 compression ratio, custom torque ground cam (marine cam grind), GT40 cast iron heads, and GT40 intake. It'll pull your stang with no problems at all. They were made in 93,94, and 95. All were speeddensity. The E303 cam WILL NOT work with the 351W. It'll throw your idle all to heck and it'll run bad to boot. If you do a cam swap that's not SD friendly then get a EEC tuner or TwEECer to tune it correctly. Mass Air conversion runs around $1000 NO JOKE. And the ones out there are crap. The only one worth anything is the Pro-M and even then you'll lose performance. They also have a tranny cooler, oil cooler, and aluminum radiators. The tranny is the heavy duty automatic E4OD with 4 inch aluminum drive shaft and a 4.10 limited slip 8.8" rear with 31-spline axles. Lightning specific 17 inch wheels with 275/60R17 inch stock tire size (lots o' meat, wide dudes). Stock factory rated at 240 hp and 340 lb/ft of torque but the hp is more closer to about 270 according to dyno tests. They are torque monsters and easy to upgrade. Mine, stock, ran a 15.3 @ 90 with a 2.3 60ft. Now if I could only hook, lol. If you need to know anything else just let me know.

Oh by the way, there are good off the shelf speeddensity cams out there. BUT the best way is to have one ground for your application so you get the most of it. Stick with speeddensity. You can run as fast you as want to with it. There's no reason to try to switch to mass air.

You'll love the Lightning. You pretty much have to drive one to appreciate what all these trucks can do. Seriously, no one believes what is said about these trucks because they've never ridden or driven them. It's one of those deals where you have to drived it to believe it. Low 15s, .9 g's on the skid pad, 60-0 mph braking in only 140ft. Big brakes, stiff for-the-twisties suspension, and lots of power (especially torque which is what these 4500 pounds bricks need).

Lightning Specs from Ford SVT Check out that link for the factory specs.

Also, here's a GEN 1 Lightning FAQ webpage that was put together by one of the NLOC members. Lots of good stuff on it.

You're welcome. Anytime. Check over in the Trucks classified forum on the NLOC site for GEN 1s for sale. Good luck finding one. They are great trucks and will look real good next to the stangs in the garage .

They are GREAT trucks. I got rid of my '93 lx for one and I do not regret it at all even though the truck is slower. It does handle better and I can pull a boat with it without any problems. I also can drive my 4 wheeler into the bed. I couldn't do either of those with the mustang. All I can say about Gen1 lightnings is that they are the best trucks ever made in my opinion. I know I LOVE mine!
