Shift Kit for 2001 GT
Hello Everyone!
This is one great message board! Lots of good information here with obviously lots of knowledgeable, interested people behind it. Hope I can keep from seeming too dumb. I'm a new member with a new car. Just recently bought a mineral grey 2001 Mustang GT automatic. I couldn't pass up the 0% interest and invoice price. Besides, I'll be needing an automatic Mustang pretty soon when I get so old I can't drive my daily driver 1991 Mustang 5.0 LX coupe 5-speed anymore. I don't like the feel of the GT's stock automatic shift, so I bought a Transgo shift kit from Summitt for it. I thought I would try and put it in myself. Anyone have any advice, lessons learned, etc. from installing these kits? Also, would there be anything wrong with replacing the transmission fluid with Type F fluid? Thanks in advance for any help. I'm sure I'll need more as I add some performance bolt-ons to the car.

Thanks 91L for your reply. I thought Type F was an old racing transmission standby. More friction and all that. I know it works great in other applications ie. 200r4, TH400. Is there something
special about the new GT auto transmissions that need the Merc5 fluid?

Merc 5 is synthetic and doesn't break down the way the older stuff did.
Read this "thesis" on Fords 4R70W tranny. It'll take you a while, but it'll teach you just about everything you will want to know about the tranny. You'll be a much wiser Ford owner after you are done. It was writted by Jerry W., an engineer who helped develop the 4R70W, and who now works for Roush Racing. http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/index.html Click on: Ford OD Transmissions 101 - Jerry's mod

91L,
After reading the TACOA articles on the transmission fluid, I think MercV is what is going back in the transmission. Thanks
