Just a thought but I've had several Broncos over the years. My '81 w/302 was disappointing. If you're looking for more power, especially for towing, look to upgrade to a 351w. I did in the '81 and it made a world of difference. Gas mileage stayed about the same. I also had a '85 F-150 2wd short box w/302. It was disappointing too. My '79 had a 351m that was better than the 302 but still lacking.
All the normal mods for the 302 will work, look for a cam geared for torque and the mods 84stang mentioned. Still, 5,000 lbs will work a 302 pretty hard. Just a thought.
Oh yeah, I now tow with an F-250 4x4 w/460. Works great but at 9-10 mpg, not much of a daily driver!
