Default fuel gage

My fuel gage in the truck doesn't work. Every since I bought it, it has been past full. The guy I bought it from had a mechanic look at it and all he said is that it wasn't the gage. I think it is the sending unit. About haw much is a new sending unit and how hard are they to change? Do they make aftermarket fuel gages, like a dash mount or something? If so, how much and how hard are they to install? I am about to have to go to Louisiana for my job and I really don't want to have to count miles to know when it is time to fill up. Thanks.
