Which engine to buy?
Hey everyone. I am contimplating getting rid of my 92 F-150 and buying a new extended cab F-150. I haven't really driven any of them yet, but was wondering what all of your thoughts were on the available engines? I really don't think I need the 5.4L as I never tow anything. Once in a while I'll have a load in the truck, but I try not to overload it. How is the 4.6 on power? How about the V6?
I am giving serious thought to the V6 as it will save on insurance and gas economy. Anyone out there have the V6? What do you think of it's power and acceleration? Thanks for all of your thoughts. ------------------ See my 1985 Mustang GT |

Well how much do you load in to it. I have 2 fiends one with a 4.6 and one with the 6 both are 98's and EXT with a full bed The one with the 6 is very happy with it they use it much like a car and dont load it up much every now and then they do and it is slow when it is fully loaded. The 4.6 guy use it like a truck and likes it He has done some towing and it is bad gas when down to 6-8MPG
I would have to say go with the 6 save you $$$$ the way you plan on using it I have only 1 time drove the V6 [This message has been edited by Stang Runner (edited 08-25-2001).] |

I've driven both. Both are good engines. The hp/torque for the 4.6L is 231 @ 4750/293 @ 3500. The 4.2L is 202 @ 4800/252 @ 3400. http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks/f-150/specs/#group10 If you are basically going to drive the truck like a car and not haul much with it and rarely pull light loads then the 6 cyl. would be good. But if you are going to haul stuff and pull moderate loads then I'd go with the 4.6L V8. Unless you have your foot to the floor at all times then your gas mileage will be MUCH better than any 6-8 mpg. I"m assuming you're looking at getting a 2 wheel drive. You should be able to get 20 mpg on the avgerage from a combination of city/highway driving. Personally I would recommend the 4.6L V8. The gas mileage is going to be pretty much the same for both of those engines. The V6 has to work a bit harder than the V8 to move the heavy truck so it's not going to get much better gas mileage. In fact I believe the EPA estimates for mpg's are pretty much the same on the window stickers, too. Go drive both and see what you think. I liked the better power of the 4.6 over the 4.2L.
