Default Gas mileage for a 1997 F150.

I just bought a 1997 4*4 F150 regular cab, short bed.
I'm only getting 14-16 miles to the gallon (highway).
I have talked to guy who has a 98, and he's getting about 16-18 in town driving.
I just changed the plugs, they looked preaty good. I'll see if this makes a change.
I"m thinking about changing the engine temp. sensor, which one is this. The one in the middle of the lower intake, or the one more on the driver's side?
Any other ideals.
Thanks Chad.

At my job we have a work truck identical to the one you are describing. It also got adout 15MPG so I think this is normal.

You might want to try going to some larger diameter tires to make your gearing more gas mileage friendly.

You also can't be absolutely sure that the other guy is actually getting 16-18 mpg in town or how he drives. Some people like to boast and tend to stretch the truth about. Your mileage does sound about right for that weight/model truck. Probably the only thing you can really do is try not to go full throttle as much because in open loop the engine dumps fuel at WOT and also try and avoid stop and go traffic.....but then again why alter your life around gas mileage. Now i'm rambling...i'll go away now.
