Default Oct.11 Mid-Mich Toys for Tots Benefit drag race

The Mid-Michigan Motorplex and www.RunWhatYouBrung.com have teamed up for Michigan's most unique drag race and show at the drag strip in Montcalm County on Saturday, October 11.

"We've thrown out almost all the rules that usually apply to hobbyist or sportsman racing" says Doug Dornbos of RunWhatYouBrung.com. "Racers are very used to seeing yellow bulbs count down to the green light so they can get a perfect starting line reaction but at this event, the starting lights go instantly to green." "Also, at most events, if you lose, you're done for the day and there's only one overall winner but here, every racer races 3 rounds and will finish the day having won 3, 2, 1, or 0 out of 3."

Here's how the racing works: In the first round of competition, the fastest (#1) qualifier is paired with the next fastest (#2) qualifier, the #3 vs. #4, #5 vs. #6, and so on to the slowest of the entries REGARDLESS of vehicle type. For the next round, the winner of each pair moves up to race the loser of the pair just faster than them on the qualifying list. The losers of the round drop back to race the winners of the pair just slower. This way, the winners keep moving up to race faster opponents, and the losers keep moving down to race slower opponents." Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and snowmobiles are all welcome to participate! High school students to retirees, first-time racers to seasoned veterans all competed at last year’s successful inaugural race in everything from purpose-built race cars and motorcycles to daily drivers to stunning show cars. If you like variety, this is the place to see it. In addition, grudge racing is allowed in qualifying. All racing is heads-up.

In addition to the racing, every spectator (including children) is invited to help judge the vehicles for the “People’s Choice” show competition. The top three vote-getters recieve a cash prize.

“Last year’s race was so encouraging that we started discussing this year’s event on the way home” says Dornbos. We donated over one-third of the spectator gate to local charities and community projects including area high school auto shop programs. "We have a contest where the school with the most students attending the race wins a piece of test equipment for their auto shop program. Last year's winner was Ionia High School. Besides having several students spectating at the race, their auto shop instructor, Clayton Powell and his father Jack and several students all raced the event.

Qualifying starts at 11 a.m., racing starts at 2 p.m. and is projected to finish by 5 p.m. Adult admission is $12, children 11 and under get in for free, all students get a 25% discount with I.D. For more information including how you can compete at this event, visit www.RunWhatYouBrung.com or call the Mid-Michigan Motorplex at 989-762-5043.
