Cool News story on street racing last night!

Did anyone see the news story on ABC "Downtown" last night at about 10:30 pm? One of the segments focused on street racing in Texas, primarily Dallas. Only 2 Stangs were shown racing (any of you guys?). The reporter spoke to and rode along w/ a guy named Steve who owned a '99-'01 TA, supposedly the guy puts $2500 a month into his car, but when he popped the hood, I couldn't see where his $$$ went (except for intake/heads/headers and by the sound, an exhaust). He raced a new Supra Turbo from a roll on the highway and wasted him.....shut it down at 130. They spoke to another guy who claimed he put in over $80k into his Supra. Guys, if I put $2500 monthly or $80k into my car, it would have wings and would fly at least mach 1. They hung out at a local hang out too, and explained how races are set up and about the dangers of racing on the street.

Seen it. If you go to LS1.com you can read all about it. Most people are ragging on the dude and rightfully so. They said he blew away the Supra but it looked loke they were running pretty even until the Supra let off, because he saw another car crossing the road ahead of them, then they showed the Supra dropping off. They were stupid racing where they did. Go to an industrial park with a road that has no roads turning onto it for a half mile and race a standing start 1/4 mile. Or get on an interstate where no one can get in front of you until the next on-ramp, then you can run whatever length you decide on. Personally i go to the dragstrip and there is a dragstrip in the dallas area, of course some people live pretty far from a dragstrip.

Cool

Can you imagine having $2500 to spend on your car monthly??? Man, that would be f'n tremendous. It's pretty pitiful that he lives w/ his wife, kid and a baby on the way in a small 2 bedroom apartment.
P.S. Not for nothin', but the guy looked like quite the dork :!

The sad truth is of course, the more you want out of a naturally aspirated engine of a given displacement, the cost goes up exponentially.

They made it sound like he spends that much just on that one car, but in reality, its his total monthly payments for his cars, loans, insurance ect ect ect....

Cool

OK.....$400 car loan, $200 insurance, $200 gas (and that's being generous on the insurance and probably gas). That would still leave $1700 for mods. That's insane - where does his $$$ go? I saw the engine and couldn't see it. He's got one rich mechanic

I hate it where I live. There are too many jap cars with these skinny wanna-be tough guys wearing white wife beaters and weighing in at a hundred-and-nothing pounds. They all spend their money on their cars(you know the stickers +15hp, wings(+20hp), racing pedals and racing harnesses(+5 each), ground effects(+20), and lets not forget the trusty fire extinguisher that will never be used(+40). Hey, if you don't beleive me come down to South FL PORT ST. LUCIE. We can race them and beat their heads in with a golf club. I hate them.

Great, just what we need.... more bad exposure here in Dallas.
Was just talking about this with some friends at work, the street racing laws getting voted on out here look like penalties from a DUI charge.

(Automatic jail time, car impoundment, drivers license taken away after first offense...)

I really hope the young "in" crowd enjoyed their fun in the sun and their Fast and Furious movie....

They just made many "real" auto enthusiast's lives harder. How long will it be until I get a ticket for "looking" fast?
The time's a comin' folks.... the media has a new scapegoat, and guess who it is?

$2,500 a month on his car????
Over $80,000 in another????

Sounds to me like "A fool and his money are soon parted". Looks like there are a lot of fools out there.

Hey, I don't even think it's a joke. Candy apple red '66 coupe with "big and littles" at a slight rake and lowered a couple of inches. 3 chamber Flows don't help much.

This is not a new phenomenon. Cops have been stopping hot rods ever since I can remember. That's a long damned time.

The guy is a regular on LS1.com. He's just a yuppie. He lives in a house that cost 500k and uses that chitty apartment they showed to stay in when he has a job in the city. All he did was make us all look bad. He's not a "real" street racer. If he was he would have never exposed himself like that or us. If you watched it he couldn't even drive his way out of a wet paper bag!IMO He didn't even powershift the car and raced off a roll?!? The whole thing was a joke. He was defending himself on ls1.com yesterday you can probably still find the topic if you look back a few pages.
