Air space???

I have 2 kicker comp 10's that I want to build a box for to fit my 93 f-150 single cab. I need to know how much air space they need. Also if anyone knows what dimensions I could use for the box and not ride on the steering wheel, that would be greatly appreciated. I had them in individual boxes behind each seat, but I had about 4 inches between me and the wheel, and I don't think they had the airspace they need. I was running a 400 watt amp, it was all I had, and they sounded really bed. I took one of them out, bought a box to fit behind the center console where the speaker faces the back wall, and it doesn't sound any better. Same amp. The speaker(s) sound like they are bottoming out. I think it is an airspace problem, but I am no pro on systems. Thanks in advance.

Hey Caymon,

I might be able to help a little, the air space for 2 10" Kicker Comps. is 2 cubic feet!!! You can make your box the entire width of the back and as high as possible. Keep it as thin as possible except at the bottom make it as deep as you can. Your right the air space is probably the cause of your speakers "bottoming out".

What brand of amp are you running? If the 400 watts is the max then no that is not enough juice to push these subs good!! Hope this helps a little and isn't to confusing.

See Ya,
Karen

It is a cheap amp that I got at a liquidation sale. It is a Pyramid. At the current time I am only running one of the subs. As soon as I can get the money to build the box, I will run them both. Thanks for the help.

No problem Caymon. Hey once you get a better amp too those kickers will sound a lot cleaner too.

First of all when you build you box, make sure the use liquid nails(or simmlar) to hold it together. And use silicone to seal it up good, so there are not air leaks. Push in the cone of the sub, it should take at least 5 seconds for it to come back out. If it pops right back out you have a air leak.

You don't have to have exactly 2 cubic feet for those Kickers. Min. sealed volume is 1 cubic foot and Max is 2.4 cubic feet. You can build you box anywhere between that range.

BTW ditch that amp. You can pick up a JBL BP300x1 from Scala1 on e-bay for 132.95

Pyramid is junk there 1000 watt amp only pushes a true 200 dirty nasty watts.

I prefer Fosgate amps for subs.

I realize these amps are junk. Like I said, I picked it up at a liquidation sale for about $75-$80 (I don't exactly remember). I had it pushing a Kicker Comp VR 15 in my stang, when it ran, and it would blow your head off. That probably has a lot to do with the way the sound reflects off the hatch. Thanks for the advice.

When you say 2 cubic feet, is that for both subs combined or for each sub? The dimensions I have to work with are: 15"h X 61"w X 7" maybe 8"d1 X 2 1/2" - 3"d2. About how much air space will that give me? I have forgotten how to figure that out when there are angles involved. I've partied alot since my engineering classes.

Also, I have a 4 channel amp that a friend gave me. Can I bridge it to utilize both channels as one to run the subs in a mono state?
If so, how would I go about doing so?
Thanks.

2 cubic feet for both subs combined, but I can be a little bigger, because 1 cubic foot per sub is Kickers Min. With the dementions you listed, the box would be about 2.51 cubic feet.

FYOI, the formula for figuring box volume with angles is
(H x W x (TD+BD)/1728)/2

I finally found some specs on these speakers. I know that for a ported box, each one requires 1.5 cu.ft. of space. Would they sound better in a ported box or a sealed box? I can make the ported boxes and have the portfacing the middle behind the center console. I am just curious what the difference in sound would be. Thanks.

Go sealed unless you've got a good bit of experiance building boxes. Ported boxes are harder to build and require more air space(Which is at a premium in your case)

For Rock, Metal, exc. sealed is better, IMO.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to build the box next weekend. Do you think a punch 800 is too much for those subs? I've got a crossover with a gain control and frequency level selector. I know that it would be better than the cheap amp I currently have, but I don't want to blow the speakers. When I get the box built, I will let you know how it sounds.

Hey Caymon I meant 2 cubic ft for both yes you can go a little bigger but this is the air space I would use to make it sound good. Tireburner is right go sealed for sure ported only works out if you are gonna compete for SPL or you don't really care how your stereo sounds as long as it is LOUD!! Sealed will sound alot better!!

Karen

Thanks for the input. Any ideas on the punch 800 amp? I have a friend that has one he is trying to sell. I haven't talked about price yet, I want to find if it is safe to use first.

How old is the amp Caymon? If it is in good condition and not been ragged out I think that would be a pretty good amp to use!!!

See Ya,
Karen;)
