Just a little more bass.

My cobra has the mach 460 sound system with the 6 disc in dash cd changer. It sounds good but it needs just a little more thump.

Weight is also a consideration since the cobra is my weekend LS-1 killer.

I was thinking of a 10" woofer in a sealed box with a 400 watt amp. I have an old punch 200 amp which puts out 400 watts rms laying around so I will use it.

I was thinking of a JL audio w6 10" woofer.

What do you think.

Shelby428cj 08-15-2002 05:29 PM

I would recommend a kicker comp. VR-10" it would take up about the same amount of space as the JL, less than a cubic foot, but the kicker will sound better and a lot louder. If you can afford it get a fiberglass box custom built at a stereo shop or on your own if you know how. It will be a whole lot lighter!!!! It should run about $200.00 to get one built, depending where you live.

Hope this helps some!!!!!!!
See ya,
Karen;)

Kicker vr 10 louder than a JL audio W6..............I dont know about that, I will look into it though.

Thanks;)

LxMustangRacer 08-15-2002 10:07 PM

Kicker a lot better? I havn't listened to both side by side to compare sheer volume, but I prefer the sound of w6's to kickers. Myself I have 3 10" w3's hooked up to a 600watt amp in my stang that provides adequate bass. So my prefrence is for the w6, but I'd say to go listen to any subs you're interested in.

Shelby428cj 08-15-2002 11:44 PM

Dark if you like the JL keep them they are still good subs, I would definately check into that fiberglass box though it is gonna not weigh near as much!!!!!!!

I think the jl audio w-6 is equivalent to a solobaric, with the solobaric being somewhat tighter sounding. A w-6 is definitely louder than a kicker comp. Although, I don't know where your going to get a w-6, they stopped making them over a year ago. Soon the w-7 will be out but it is going to cost like 2-3 times what a w-6 costed.
Also if you're only going with a 10" and are not satisfied by the stock mach system, perhaps you should go with a ported box. JL subs work very well with a port and you get an extra 3db which translates into the equivalent of having a second 10" sub.

Shelby428cj 08-20-2002 01:04 PM

In my shop we have a display truck (extended cab dodge ram) that has 3 15" kicker L7's and we have ZR1000 hooked up to coil of the sub heehee that is 2400 watts to each sub. And is hitting 158.3 db. So, I am a huge kicker fan, not to say JL is bad I like them too and they are a little cheaper.

tireburner163 08-20-2002 10:33 PM

1) You can still get W6's, in fact they are redesigning them. A W7 with less power handleing

2) the W7 and been out for a while now

3) the L7 sounds like ***, it will pound, but sucks for SQ

4) the W6 is better than the VR. The VR is more along the lines of the W3.

no dis, I run Kicker

Shelby428cj 08-23-2002 12:50 AM

Yup we sure do plus I am from Oklahoma ya know kicker = Stillwater designs heeeheee they are made in Oklahoma! But really I have never seen a sub handle as much power as they do! Yah the are LOUD but I think they sound pretty good for as loud as they are..... We also sale JL and some others too... I am not that huge of a kicker fan, well for SPL I am but in my car which is an SQ car for contests, I use 2 12" Xtant X series subs and amps....

www.ddaudio.com

digital designs subwoofers, they are rated at over 2000 watts music and can handle even more, they also sound pretty good if you want sq and not all out spl.

Shelby428cj 08-25-2002 11:39 AM

Cool I gonna check those out Drewkeen! Do you have these in your car??? If not what do you have?

See Ya,
Karen

Drewkeen 08-25-2002 01:09 PM

i have a buddy with a dd9512 in his car...its loder than nearly all systems around here, even louder than one guy with 3 15's. i am waiting on an image dynamics idmax10 dual 4 ohm to come off back order, until i get that in, i am putting in an eclipse sub this week, also a 10 in a small sealed box (these two both work best in these, ideal for a stang). i have a rockford bd1000.1 to power them and ill have more detials within the next week or so as i begin installing them with a friend thats a professional.

Shelby428cj 08-25-2002 01:17 PM

I own a stereo shop and I use my 99 stang for a SQ car at contests. I have 2 12" Xtant subs and 3 Xtant X series amps and for mids I am running boston acoustic..... I am gonna have some info. sent to my shop about those digital designs. Thanks for the link.... Do you or any of your friends do stereo contests???

See Ya,
Karen:cool:

Drewkeen 08-26-2002 05:52 PM

i dont because i just enjoy the bass, i have a friend that does, but he does spl contests and uses that dd9512 and does pretty well, im not sure what hes hitting, ill ask hi mnext time i think of it. if you like sq, thenm check in to image dynamics, theyre supposed to be the best subs around for sq according to several tests and people that have used/heared them at termpro.com

oh, forgot to say this, im still waiting on my sub to come off backorder, ill let you know how it is when i get ti put in.

Dark_5.0 08-26-2002 05:55 PM

I know I guy that has 2 Digital designs 15's in his dodge ram. He has 2 kicker 1000 watt amps pushin them.

They are made out of kevlar.......Very loud.

Later,

Drewkeen 08-26-2002 06:04 PM

hes barely pushing them, my buddy is running in the neighborhood of 2200 RMS watts, those subs can handle unbelieveable amounts of power.

Shelby428cj 08-26-2002 06:06 PM

Yah I carry image dynamics and I like them but I think I like the xtants a little better. Yah I would like to know what your friend is hitting. We have a guy we installed a 12" Kicker L7 and it is in a little 4 door tracker and he is hitting 148.2 db which is pretty good for one sub. Talk to ya later.

Karen:cool:

PonyPride 08-27-2002 04:25 PM

JL

Ive got 2 12" JL12-w6's in my stang being pushed by 2 kenwood 600w 829s amps, they are louder than most anything ive ever heard. I dont know how u could want something louder unless its for competition only

Shelby428cj 08-30-2002 05:46 PM

HEEHEE Pony that is like telling drag racers that there is such a thing as a mustang being too fast!!!!!

The Louder the better right Dark 5.0?!!!!!??!?!!!!???

See Ya,
Karen:cool:

Mustangbelle306 09-03-2002 09:21 AM

Karen's got the right idea with the Xtants, you may also want to check out the Soundstream Tarantulas or the aluminum Eclipse 10s...I don't really like any of the Kicker/JL/Sony stuff, if you're gonna buy a sub, buy a GREAT sub and keep it forever :D

Karen: You're running Boston Acoustics? Excellent choice! :) The 6.5 pros? I was checking those out too, but they aren't as easy to find as other brands. Originally I had my heart set on the 6.5 HCCAs, but they were backordered :( I eventually decided on the Focal 165K2s

What are you talking about, my Sony Xplod 10's POUND, they out hit 2 Stroker 15's........lol:D

But for real, the JL Audio W7 is nice.......even thought I'd rather just buy two IDQMax's.;)

Sadly Im sure there are MANY people out there that truly believe that :D :(

Shelby428cj 09-06-2002 07:17 PM

LMAO yup there are lots of people or should I say Kids that believe that. Just like ricers thinking hondas are fast I guess!

See Ya,

haha, thats wrong.

i have a buddy thats been making boxed for many years, he has a 200watt mtx 8" in a special ported box ad it hit nearly as loud as 3 12's in a ported box and was like a fourth of the size. it was designed very well.

jj_jonathon 09-07-2002 01:59 AM

you know....i never really liked JL audio until I heard a 13.5" W7 last night...wow....1000 clean watts pushed to it in a very nice box in the rear of an SUV....he had his passenger side windows down halfway and the air pushing out the windows was incredible since this is merely one sub...very nice looking sub too...clean...its my new favorite :D

LxMustangRacer 09-07-2002 02:41 AM

So the W7's are living up to what i've heard about them. I really need to demo some 13.5" W7's, curious how much louder and clearer two would be than my set of 3 10" w3's I've got right now.

MidNiteBlu 5.0 09-09-2002 07:46 PM

It seems alot of people on here like the W7. I have personally never heard one but from hearing what other people had to say they sounded like they were a waste of money. Good subs but too much money. But that could be different now I dunno lol.

The W7 is a ecellent sub, but IMO is a bit pricey. You could get two IDQMAX's for the price of one W7. Price biases peoples opinions, if the W7 was $200 bucks, it would be hailed as one of the greatest subs on the market.
