Default Air Bag explosion! (listen To PKRWUD)

He knows what he's talking about!

Awhile back he gave me some advice on the airbags in my car...and of course I didn't do what he told me to. Last night while starting to finish up the "Sara Swap" (another thread) I got the pedals and steering column back in and hooked up all the wires. Well, just to make sure everything was hooked up right I put the battery terminal back on and sat down in the car floor board, (I've removed the seat for easier access) put the key in - and turned it.

BAM!

The next thing I know I'm laying in the back seat and my car was smoking! My brother came running out of the shop and I slowly stumbled out of the car. The air bag had just exploded 6 INCHES FROM MY HEAD!

It's about 7 AM (next morning) now. My vision is blurry and my right ear wont stop ringing (D*AM THATS ANNOYING) so as it looks right now 'Sara Swap' is running a little behind schedule but I still hope to have it done by Tuesday. Wish me luck !

BTW: Does anybody want to buy a steering colum with he airbag blown up for a 93 'Stang?

In a whole lot of pain

Adam

Unhappy Sorry for your pain

Adam:

Sorry for your injuries but it could have been even even worse. Hope you're O.K. soon, Adam.

Note to all:

Airbags are dangerous and must be handled just like dynamite, in my opinion.

NEVER be even close to one while installing a steering wheel or related components.

End of warning.

Ouch! I hope you're ok! I couldn't imagine one of those going off on me! I'm glad my '88 doesn't have 'em, I've been under that column a hundred times!
Good luck replacing it, I hope you find a good one at a junkyard fairly cheap!

I have never liked or thought air bags were of any value. Sorry to hear about being KOed by Airbag Lewis, hehe.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Airbags aren't no joke! I was in a highway speed collision in a 300E Mercedes where I was t-boned from a side road and sent off into the first axle of a semi truck that was waiting to make a left turn off of the 4 lane highway I was driving on. I didn't see the airbag come up and I swear I heard the charge that set it off after I already saw it deflating. My right eye swelled shut and the whole right side of my face was cut up and swollen. However with it being an offset frontal collision the airbag is quite likely to have prevented me from breaking my neck or back from folding over the shoulder belt, for a 60-0 time of tenths of seconds, thats a lot of force happening right in front of you. I'm still a believer that they can be a lifesaver. But damn they can hurt!

302, THAT SUXS! anyways, i have never been in an accident with airbags. i have seen them go off and that crap that comes out of it is TOXIC! in school, my instructor wanted to show us how powerful airbags are. we got donated vehicles from GM and all the airbags are removed before they come to the school, well they forgot to take on off, so my instructor took the airbag and put it in a vise. then he put a 4cyl block on it. wired it up form a distance and applied some voltage. BANG! it threw the block right off the bench! ever since then, most didnt want to touch a car with a bag when they were servicing the column. just to show you how powerful it is! so i know you know how powerful it is, now others know as well! be careful!

Woh' that is some crazy stuff, but get that checked out. Better to be safe then sorry. Glad when they made my car they didn't even know what airbags were. When I was in my accident with my moms Montana it didn't go off but it wasn't really a impact accident, more the less just a offroading accident threw a few peoples lawn.

Hope ya get better,
Take it easy.

yeah my first accident involved airbags hitting my face square on. My hearing was affected for about a week and my face was burned and swelled...all that for a 15-20 mph frontal collision..gotta love 1st gen airbags

I, too hate them, especially being a short chick. My airbag light is currently on in my 94, and I HOPE it means the airbag is broken Gotta get that checked out. Hope you feel better soon!

Never experienced airbags firsthand, or even secondhand for that matter.

This just reminds me of the scene in Dumb & Dumber where Lloyd is dropping off Mary at the airport and is looking off to the side when he rear-ends another car and the airbag deploys. I love that movie.

Default My side of the story

Ok now my side of the story, being Adams older bro and having done this swap in my 90 5.0 I am kinda overseeing the project I guess you could say. I was standing in front of the car with the hood up inspecting some previous work he had done while he was under the dash connecting all the plugs back up after installing the clutch pedals and stuff. It never crossed my mind about his airbag going off. I remembered that little beeping but didnt think anything about it. All the sudden I heard a loud (poof) as I would say, it sounde like a basketball or something exploded the way the air came out of it. All I could think of was that he had jsut blown his car up. Adam has had a BAD problem with just riggin (bad Adam) things up in his car. I had convinced him to fix all this while the dash was apart and I thought that is what he was working on. I stepped around the side of the car and he was stumbling like he was on a 4 day drunk. I asked him what was wrong and what happened and he couldn't eve stutter, his eyes were as big as dinner plates and there was so much SMOKE coming out of the car I could tell that the airbag went off. I never knew these things smoked but they do, this one did for about ten minutes. When he finally realized he wasnt dead he started to talk and hurt, his eye was all blood shot red the right side of his face looked red. I figured out what had happened then, I asked him again if he was ok. He said he was and just kinda stood there for a minute collecting his thoughts. He went in the house and came back in a minute and started right back in on the car. I told hinm at least he could go after market with a new Grant wheel or something its just a real crappy way to get a new wheel.

Hes ok now, still a little ear ringin but its gettin better. And the dash is all back toget her adn the pedals are installed, now all we gotta do is swap trannys, fun fun.

Brad

At the right angle, and 6 inches closer...that could have easily broke your neck. Consider yourself very lucky.
