Post Interior lighting problem

I'm installing an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, temp, and map lights in a 2000 convertible. I'm having a horrible time trying to get the map lights to work. I have installed a relay on the two wires going up to the original map lights and the wire to the new lights, as well as a ground. The lights will work backwards (on when I lock the doors, off when I unlock them), but not at all if I reverse the configuration. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
