Default Speakers in '86 Dash

The '86 5.0 GT I bought had a premium system in it, cause when I got it; everything was removes accpet 6X9s in the hatch. Is it hard for me to remove the dash to in stall new speakers? And what size are the speakers does it run? I see three holes in dash, does that mean 3 speakers in the dash?

Thanks in advance fello stangers...

I'm not sure about your 86, but, my 90 used 3.5's in the dash. They have 3 screws in a triangle pattern.

My 86 GT also had the premium sound system. The outside holes are for the 3.5" speakers; the middle hole is for the premium amp. To get to the speakers/amp, you need to remove the dash pad. There are a bunch of screws accross the front near the window, I believe three up under the edge of the gauge panel and about the same number above the glove box panel. Once those are out, take every precaution removing that pad - mine was so brittle it cracked and the repop replacements are less than satisfactory. NOS or prime used pads fetch premium money.

11 total screws to remove the dash pad: one on each end of each defrost vent, two above the glove box, and two behind the instrument panel trim, which is itself held on by three screws that go up into the dash pad. As was said, there are two 3.5" speaker mounts at the corners, and 1 5x7" mount in the center (used for the amp in the premium systems; was for a single speaker in old AM-only mono radios).

You might call Matt at Fox Mustang Restoration about a reproduction dash pad; I saw a thread at FourEyedPride.com a while back where he was working on getting a better quality reproduction made. Not sure if they're available yet or not.
