removing speedo cable from gauge cluster
i got the bouncy speedo with the random annoying rubbing/squeaking sound of death. i hate that noise! is there a trick to remove the speedo cable from the back of the cluster?
i figure i can try and lube it, what should i use? will it help my problem or is it the the gears in the factory speedo making the noise, thats my guess..........

Um, isnt it just a tab on the top? If it's not coming out when you pinch the plastic sleeve tab, then it probably needs lots of jiggling and wd-40.
My car had the bouncy speedo and my friends got a kick out it! I finally got tired of it, switched the cable and gear and no more problem! You're on the right track

Speedo gear in the tranny. Funny thing was I had switched the speedo gear first (it was SHREDDED) and the speedo kept right on bouncing. That means my shredded gear was still driving the cable! I was impressed. Pretty easy to switch the speedo gear, it's one bolt and a clip.
I would gently spray some wd-40 into the back of the cluster though where the speedo cable goes in. I also hung my speedo from a hook vertically and poured silicone down the length of it to get it nice and slick inside so it wouldnt bind again while I owned the car.

Your prob should be the cable itself, I had it too, replaced the cable, and viola.

so to change the gear, take off the bolt and clip, exchange gears and reverse. were is it located on the tranny and it it hard to get at? have not had a chance to look under there. sounds easy, just dont want to get over my head

There is a bracket with a small bolt through it that holds the speedo gear in the tranny. Take that bolt off and the gear and cable will slide out of the tranny. The gear is only held on the cable with a small clip. Just slide it off and the gear comes off.

I second what the man said! On a t-5 and an AOD, they are in the same place: driver's side tailshaft. One bolt, then she slides out, pop the clip of, switch and reverse.
One note of caution!!!!! It is SUPER easy to get that bolt that holds in the module to strip or get stuck. Beware!

Actually, it's either 2.73 or 3.08.
Get up on the highway and record you speed and rpms and then go to this website http://www.4x4cyberstore.com/website/rpmchart.html To figure out what gears you have

Tell me what letter is there and I'll tell you what gear you have. I forget what letters represent which gear ratio right now.

crazypete- used the link you posted.
tire size = 225/60/15 = 25.6 height at 60 MPH in 5th gear, i was at 1500 RPM's. according to the formula, at 60mph w/ 2.73's, i sould be at 1720 mph's. obviously higher rpm's if i had 3.08's. so even though i was at 1500 and the link stated 1720, i think i have 2.73's. sound right? am i supposed to measure rpm's @ 60mph in 5th or 4th gear? 82GT- i will check the sticker and let you know what i find all this would be resolved if i had the time to jack up the car and count the # of tire rotations in relation to driveshaft rotations!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHHA

My differential actually didnt have a tag on it strange enough. I was wholelly convinced I was running 2.73's until I made my gearswap and was prying the old gearset out and saw 3.08 stamped on the ring. You can never tell
