Question '78 mustang II gas gauge

the gas gauge in my 78 is not reading correctly. it will say about half a tank and the more i drive it the more gas the gauge says i have in it, then it will drop and say i have no gas in the tank. i have checked on a new sending unit. it is no longer in production for the 78 mustang II. can anyone help me?
