Viper GTS, GSX-R 600
I just got home today from my honeymoon and I got 2 races today. First was the Viper. I am pretty sure it was a GTS. It had no stripes, but was solid red with the big hatch back.
The new wife and I were cruising down the freeway (M-59) when I spotted him hauling apples in my rear view. I am thinking "OH YEAH!!! HE'S GAME!!" He gets right next to me holding his R's high and actually rev's at ME!!! I motion for him to slow down and we drop to about 35 mph, right in the meat of my 2nd gear. He is looking over at me and I waive him to take the jump. He goes with my a tick behind. I start pulling next to him, shift into 3rd and keep pulling by almost the top of 3rd he was somewhere near my rear bumper and he lets off!!! What a wuss! While I was in 3rd I did the little "bye bye" waive out the window. That probably pi$$ed him off I guess. We ran into traffic shortly after and could not get another run. Next it the bike. He was pulling out of a parking lot and I threw him a rev for kicks as I drove by. So he pulls out and flies up next to me. The road (Schoenherr) was a little curvy so we paced each other till the road went straight. And what is right in front of us? A RED LIGHT!! We sit at the light and he asks what I have in it. I tell him a 302. He gives me the brush off hand motion! I ask if it is a 600. He says yeah, but I have it jetted and a pipe. (Vance and Hines) So I say cool, lets go on green..... The light goes green and we are dead nuts through first. I shift 2nd and start taking back his slight holeshot. He shifts and drops a little. I bang 3rd and run it to the top with him just out of my periferhial (sp) vision. I guess I had about a car. I pulled next to him again for another go from a roll but he would not look over. Damn, I have to get back to the track..... |

Thanks, I have not had any races that good in a while. There were two kills way up on the list for sure.
I have a basic heads/cam/intake 302. TFS heads/E-303/GT-40. My heads and lower intake are ported pretty nicely too. My car only weighs 2760 lbs with almost a half tank of gas and no driver, so turns a decent number. The 100 shot of nitrous helps too I guess. The last time to the track I ran a string of 12.0's @ 120-122. That was with 2 problems. Fuel pressure only hitting 60 psi on the spray due to a bad pump, and valve guides that were so bad that I left oil spots on the shop floor after my dyno pulls. (right out of the tail pipes!) This stuff is fixed, and my bottle pressure was at 1100 psi for these runs. At the track it was only at 750-800. I can say it feels faster, but the 12.0 is the last hard number I have. I don't want to be one of those guys who says their car runs 11's because they beat their buddies car that runs 12's, yada yada..... |

exgmguy, how did you fix the valve guide problems? That's the only negative I've ever heard about TFTW heads. I even contacted Trick Flow and they just brushed me off saying that was just BS and no truth to it. I know you and Skyman have built KICK A$$ engines with them. Any comments appreciated. Damn, I want some TFTW heads, but am a little leary.

Rev: I have TFS TW's too and have had no problems with valve guide issues. From what I understand, TFS corrected this valve guide problem a few years ago (like right when I bought mine). The heads they offer now should not have this problem.
This problem was really bad with the early castings, but now you really don't hear much about it since they have made the changes. Now go get those heads and start whompin' on some cars!! E ------------------ 1991 5.0 LX Coupe - 38,000 miles 13.17 @ 106.14 mph w/ 2.138 60' |

Thanks Eric. I had heard that those issues had been resolved, but then I heard exgmguy mention it. I'm gonna get some TFTW heads fairly soon I hope. I'm wishing for 30 HP over my pocket ported, gasket matched 351W heads.

Yup, The earlier castings had the problems. They had cast iron guides to keep costs down. Problem is they did not last very long. My heads are the early versions. I had the iron guides.
TFS will replace these early guides for free no questions asked. Even if the heads have been ported. They are on their 3rd casting of this head as well. They don't tell you that though... |

I believe the last year of the bad guides was 1998.
I got my heads EARLY 1999, so Im wondering if I have the bad guides. But it doesnt burn any oil, and runs great still, so I don't think so.
