Question Should I run an air cleaner at the track?

I currently have a 4 inch k&n filter with the extreme lid. I see alot of guys not running any type of air cleaner at all. What does everybody do? The reason I am asking is that I am going from a torker II to a victor jr intake and I don't think I can get a 4 inch air cleaner under the hood. The hood I have now is a 4" cowl.

I would at least have a piece of panty hose over your carb. It would really suck if a rock or something somehow got sucked into your engine. I've seen a piston where a nut got dropped into the intake and eventually made it to one cylinder and pretty much tore up the top of the piston and both valves and the cylinder wall. It looked like someone had gone crazy with a ball peen hammer. So, yeah, put something on there, doesn't have to be a big *** filter though.

Are you using a drop base with your air cleaner?
If not, you can get up to a 1 1/4 inch drop base...then you shouldn't have a problem with the hood clearence on a 4 inch cowl. They are available from various speed shops.
Good luck

U should never not run a air filter. It is too little of a differnce for what you can give up if something does go wrong.

Theres lots of carbureted race cars that dont have air cleaners. The only reason I use one is because they are mandatory in my class.

Dyno's I have seen, the stangs produce more HP the longer the filter is, for example, a 4inch filter produced a lower # on the same car vise a 9inch filter. Just my $.02....
