Matching paint color
 

Help. I just had my 1983 Mustang GT Convertable painted to the original bright red paint. The new color looks like it has too much orange in it. I've asked Ford for a color chip, but they said they don't carry that part number any more. So, what can I do to get an exact color sample? Thanks- Joel

did you use the VIN number at the paint shop?

Jodi, no vin number used. (The guy that painted the car said he had gotten two formulas for mixing and matching paint of the only two reds that Ford made that year. After comparing the two samples, he went with the one that was by far the best match.) I have got a paint code from my original car invoice but Ford won't do anything for me except acknowledge it as an old paint code.

Any good paint shop should be able to mix up and match the color dead nuts, based on the paint code from the data tag on the car and the very precise mixing systems that are now used. You have to trust that the painter did this correct, especially since its already painted. As far as the chip goes, you might want to check around with some body/paint shops in your area that have been in business for a while. Many of these places may have original chip samples hanging around from years past for the older cars.

Ok thanks for the reply, and I do painfully understand that car has already been painted, and hoping that a paint match will calm my fears of a wrong color.
