Default Shift Knob Replacement

I just picked up my 2001 GT yesterday..still getting used to the different throw in the gear box but that stock shift knob just seems to get worse every year! The thing is so thick and stubby that I actually missed a gear today because my hand slipped off of it...But I just ordered a brand new chrome Cobra head shift knob (freaky looking too), how exactly do you go about removing the stock shift knob and putting the other on...do these things just twist off? Those shift knobs are threaded, they just unscrew. They are EXTRA tight from the factory, but once you get it started they screw off easily.
