Dyno runs. Good and bad 2003 SVT lightning
Ok did my dyno tune. What a LONG day.
OK, mods done before shop so I had no baseline. Mods: C & L upper intake, Acufab single blade TB, C & L intake tube, C & L 95mm maf and air filter. 4# lower pulley kit & colder plugs. After 12 pulls( 19 deg timing ) we go a max HP of 381 (sae) 389 (std) with 478 tq. Only problem was the 95mm maf was making the Air mixture go nuts it would drop to a rich 10:1 or lower. Hence the 12 runs and 12 chip flashes. So we went back to the 90 mm maf(stock) and used an adaptor plate with the air filter. Results on runs 13 & 14 was 380 hp with 458 ft lbs of tq(19 deg timing and 11.5:1 fuel). It seems I'm the 1st person in my area to have the 95 MM maf and the programs available didnt have the specs for the added air. So, after a call to C & L and to superchips, we have the datasheets for the new maf and by next week will have a usable program to put on the chip. looking to make 400HP at the rear wheel. with either 19 or 20 degs of timing. keeping my fingers crossed. |

Sweet. Let us know how it turns out. I know I'd like to finally do a few more upgrades to my Lightning myself and get it up to about 400 HP, as well.

Sounds good. I have heard that those lightnings will last as long as they are not shifted high.
I have always heard of people having trouble with C & L.

With the correct tune, you should see 400rwhp without much of a problem. The 03-04's usually dyno in the 350-360 rwhp range. Hope all goes well next session!!

Are they monitoring MAF, boost and injector duty cycles? We are averaging (tuning) about 2 Lightnings per week (some) using the SCT BA2400 and the SCT software. With a set up very similar to yours we were seeing 400-450 on a Mustang Dyno (loaded for the actual vehicle weight).
Our average tuning time is approx. 90 minutes. Whose chip are you using? Ron

ahh, No, No and no again. Thats why i need a better tuner. Up to 401 HP but pig rich and down on torque. I heard Ed Clarke i raleigh NC was a good tuner. That and the pro racer software should get me going. Ohh and a Kenny bell

Its pretty tricky to do a tune well, unless you know what all the components are doing. Once you establish everything is good, MAF isn't peaking, injectors are up to the requirements etc then hit the dyno and tune. On the Lightnings we discovered that the fuel pumps max at about 450 at the tire. Companies like SCT also HIGHLY recommend you have a bung installed or using one of the existing sensors to monitor AFR, rather then using a "tail pipe" sniffer. We have seen them be off be .5 to a full point. They also suggest that the best option is to do the tuning on a load bearing dyno, so it simulates actual vehicle weight on the road.
On our website we have some "staff blogs" on some of the vehicles we have done, with some amazing results. Last FYI...never race a Lightning with a 1/4 tank or less. The shape of the tank, on launch, uncovers the pick ups and they go lean. Best of luck and hope you see good results, Ron

I have the sct ba2400 Maf, so Im good there. On stock block, I dont think ill go over the 450 mark. Getting the xcalibrator 2 as soon as SCT gives a trade in value for newer xcalibrators 1's. That way I can apply it towards pro racer package.

We were expecting our first shipment of the X-Cal II's on the 23rd of this month (supposedly the first ones on the West coast). I got the call yesterday that it has slipped about a week or maybe more. The trade in amount will be set in about another 30 days after first deliveries. I can let you know when they arrive.
One other option to consider is the new Boost Cooler that is now out. Methanol/Water mix. That way you will never need to use race gas again. Just 92 octane on the street or track. You could burn 2 progams, one track and one street. On the track setting, you could run the 92, but turn on the Boost Cooler to run a bit more Boost and timing. It is now even used with N2O. On a 100 shot, it will ad about 10-15% over the shot size. Should be good for some more HP. Ron

What about a kenney Bell? looking for 14 psi. About where I am now with the 4# metco and ported apten. If i sell the Muxtang bracket car, maybe I can go all out. but thats a big if. Right now my budget is set, KB and pro racer.

Big difference between the KB and Apton. 2.3 vs. 1.4 roughly. The KB will made a lot more power. We should have a KB equipped 5.4 finished by the end of the month with a Stage II JDM.
Be careful on boost levels. The stock valve spring (based on testing) will float the valves under too much boost. I think you will be elated with the KB. Ron

Yep, I was reading a thread over at NLOC and they were finding that around 17 or so psi the valves were floating. And also, when running running stiffer springs hardened valve tiPs were needed. But as i mentioned. I dont plan on going over 14 psi.( FOG>Dave is my name there)
