Default Gears gears gears...

Everyone is talking about how great a new set of gears can be. But what is involved with installing a new set? Is it a DIY? Is it easy to mess up the differential? What about calibrating the speedometer afterwards? Also what kind of a gas mileage hit would you expect going from stock to say, 4:10s?

in general for a daily driver, 3.73's are good w/ stick, 4.10's w/ automatics. as for gas mileage, you highway MPG will go down a little as you will be cruising at higher rpm's. as for around town, if you don't mash the gas on every light and let the torque push you along, you may not see any decrease in city MPG.

as for installation, unless you are fairly skilled in rears, i would consider having a good shop install it as a sub-par install will lead to rear chatter and headaches

I agree with 83 right up until the last sentence. I have 4.30's in mine, 5 speed Tremec. I think the OD in the 5 speeds let's you get away with more gear. I ran 4.10's in her for 2 years, and had absolutely NO issues on the freeway.

Click on the "analyzer" button in here, there's an awesome calculator for figuring out engine speed/car speed/rear gears. You'll be surprised how steep of a gear you can get away with.

Don't Fear The Gear!
