Bad idea? DIY Centrifugal Supercharger

I've been reading these forums for a little while, but this is my first post. Anyway, I'd like to hear what you all think of this idea.

Let me preface this with the point that i'm a poor university student so I don't have an awful lot of money to throw at my car. I don't plan on kicking the heck out of it either. I just want a nice, speedy car. My car is stock with the exception of 3.55 rear end, AOD shift kit, cold air, and the stuff that doesn't matter like stereo, interior, etc.

At any rate, forced induction sounds good to me, but is outlandishly expensive.. Used turbochargers are plentiful and inexpensive but I'm not up for building a full turbo manifold. Superchargers are hard to come by. It occured to me that maybe I could build a supercharger out of inexpensive parts to give me a few pounds of boost. Like the intake side of a t04 turbo mated with a high-rpm gearset and a pulley. DIY supercharger. :)

With out a transmission to give you 3-1 or 4-1 ratio you will never build any boost. At 5000engine rpm with no gear ratio you would never build 1psi. The other thing is the turbo does not have bearings and if it does it cost more than a supercharger. No bearings because a turbo has no side load. You can find cheap used superchargers for $600-$800. The other thing would be a mount to align the turbo to the crank even if what you wanted was possible. If you want cheap power at a budget go with Nitrous and no more than you would use it you would not fill the bottle that often anyways.

Nitrous is illegal here :p, though I suppose I could get away with it anyway, maybe.

What I meant by gear set is a gear box driven by a pulley with a 10:1 or higher ratio driving the turbo. Your point about side-load i hadn't considered.. though maybe the gear box could eliminate that load.

Nitrous maybe illegal on the road up there (it is here too) but you can hook the bottle up at the track, which is really the only place the extra power would be beneficial. How fast do you really want to get up to 40 klicks on the road, eh?

Nitrous is illegal using it on the streets here, but as long as you have the bottle disconnected while cruising the cops can't do anything.

Just hook it up at the track and disconnect it when you go home.
