Default Will a newer T5 Tranny fit a 66 with 289?

I am getting a 66 coupe with lots of rust, but the engine runs good and the tranny is said to be needing a re-build. Some one totaled our 88 GT convertible, it was parked on the street in front of the house and he crashed into it. I just had the T5 re-built. Will it work in the 66? It's an original 289 w/ 4 speed manual. I just want to use the five speed for fuel economy and the fact it was just re-built, since the 4 speed in the 66 needs to be re-done. I would save the original 4 in case I sold it or something. I would see about getting it re-done too.
Anyway, will it fit?

You sure can, it has been done plenty. That is also a good year for the t5 trans. I cant remember off the top of my head if the clutch from your 66 with work with the t5 however. When I was doing mine (going a completely different direction now) I bought a special flywheel that accepted the late model clutch for the T5. Though I would see if the clutch/pressure plate assembly will bolt up to your original flywheel first.
Anyway here is an article that should help you: Manual Transmission Conversion - Five Gears Of Freedom

You should post up some pics of your car! It'll be nice to know that sheetmetal for these cars is cheap!

Thank you for that info. I was reading on another message board that I googled, after I posted this question, and one person said when he did this conversion, he had to shorten the drive shaft. Is this true. I started reading the info on the link you gave me, but right now I don't have to to read it all. But if you have the answere before I finish reading the info on that link, go ahead and post it. I will still read the info on the link though. Thank you.
BTW, do you know about how much it cost to rebuild the 4 speed that is in the 66?

Yes I do believe you will have to get your driveshaft shortened. Im not sure what it would cost to rebuild your 4spd, but in the end if you are using your mustang to go for cruises you would be happier with the 5spd.
