What is stock?

We argue all the time about this. If you go to the track, every 350 chevy there is stock. No matter if it runs 16s or 9s. Stock? Just ask the guy, "yea it's just a stock small block chevy" What a Dick!

Ok, did a 93 cobra come with a E cam, cobra intake, and 65mm TB? If so, I run a stock 93 cobra motor, with a ported intake.

What do yall think?

i know what you mean, just because i put a k&n filter, flow's & an o/r x-pipe on my car, this azzz say's it aint stock, yeah go figure.    ;)

Having someone say it's a stock 350 is probably for a few reasons: 1. the guy doesn't want to reveal his "speed secrets", 2. the guy is too lazy to explain anything to a "ford guy", 3. The guy doesn't know anything about cars, or 4. The vehicle is actually stock.

If people ask me what i've done to my car i usually summarize/list the most "important things" because if not the person i'm talking to gets bored. I usually just say "a ton of bolt on stuff", i usually invite the person to see for themself because a picture is worth a thousand words.

I suppose it also has to do with how often the person is asked the question. Until i raise my hood, no one asks anything unless it's another 5.0 mustang guy, whereas if you have a bad@ss tubbed Olds 442 you may get way more questions than someone with a more common car.....

....i'm just rambling and not making any sense :D

usualy it's reason #1 depending on where your are, the person your talking to, and other minor things. especially at the track where you might run smeone and they say there stock but run times that are too good to be stock as they claim. even friend i hang out with don't tell us what they realy have. we had a guy that his cam would lope alot and he would always says he just had an e-cam and one guy called him out and said he's do the teardown and pay for the gaskets and stuff if he found an e-cam there and the guy declined him. come to find out it wasn't an e-cam like we figured.

Stock is just that.......stock. No mods to the car

I'll let a K&N and a cat-back slid by as stock. But stuff like H or X pipes or other bolt-on's aren't counted as a "stock" motor.

Also I consider the car stock or modded. Not the motor. If you've got a stock motor but 7K worth of exhaust, suspention, etc. Your car ain't stock.

88workcar You don't have a cobra motor. You've got a 5.0 HO with ported heads and bolt-ons.

Stock is a relative term

I think we can all agree that 'stock' means the car is exactly the way it rolled off the assembly line, give or take a K&N.

Few peformance-minded people, the kind that buy V-8 Mustangs, have totally stock vehicles - and we know that. Guys you meet at a drag strip are even less likely to have totally stock vehicles and that should also be a given, no matter what anyone says. The timeslips tell the story. Most of us have a pretty good idea of what, say, a 'stock' 5.0 Mustang or older 350 Camaro should run (high 13's to low 14's) so when that 'stock' Camaro runs a 12-something we know it isn't stock - or close to it.

I think the game of calling your car 'stock' - when it isn't - is just a manifestation of smugness, a way of saying: "none of your business" while for others it may be reflexive and a result of being asked "What's it got?" a thousand times by people who don't understand 'what it's got' even when you tell them. I've found that Ford guys are more forthcoming when asked 'what they've got' when they know I'm a Ford guy too. Chevy guys tend to clam up; a typical 'You're-not-in-the-club' attitude and while I find it silly, I do understand it.

I only have minor mods and almost none on the engine so I say I'm 'stock' to the average inquiry. If someone is really interested - and I'm in the mood - I'll run down the mod list (it's short) but add that the engine is internally stock, which is what most people who care enough to ask, really want to know.

The Deuce 01-21-2003 12:25 PM

I call my car stock. To be honest, its not totally. The time I ran in my sig was with the following:

No strut brace (not all came with 'em anyway)
K&N, no snorkel
Steeda Tri-ax (should have been stock)
No spare/jack
Ford 9mm wires (stockers had an open #8)
Champion coppers
Tires at 25 psi

Now I don't know about where everyone else lives, but if I called my car modified I'd get laughed at. Sure when the h-pipe, gears and timing adjuster go on, it won't be stock anymore. But right now there is nothing that would raise an eyebrow under a warranty.

I guess that would be how I'd define stock. If you do it to an 03, and it doesn't even cross your mind that it would effect the warranty, then you're still stock. Unless of course another Mustang guy(girl) is poking around and wants to know.;)

bigbandjohn 01-21-2003 01:52 PM

Well, My car is stock. Nothing is modified from the original (yet). I replaced my stolen headlights with Ford headlights. My tires are even the same type that were on there originally. No Smugness. My car IS stock.... today.

Of course, I plan on doing some real mods soon. I will ask for advice soon, but until my '66 is rolling, the mods take a second seat.

stock

1. a piece of a company that decreases in value every day.

2. a vehicle that warranty would still cover.

I'm not upset or anything. I also think it's a great subject.

I was just saying that you don't have a Cobra motor due to the fact the Cobra's have different heads, a different cam, computer, etc than you.

I hope you understand I was smiling when I wrote that. No real offense intended.
