Default Dist. gear......cast or steel?

Dist.gear, cast or steel.....5.0 HO
I have a 92 5.0HO, converted to carbs, Accel Duraspark Dist., GM HEI module.

First fire up she ran great, noticed slight water leak behind timing housing, pulled found some pitting, repaired!

While cover was off I noticed massive wear on the dist. gear!!!!!!
Motor maybe had 15 min run time. !@#$%^&*

Flat tappet cams use cast gear, roller cam use steel gear......

How can I tell what cam I have?

To my knowledge the engine is factory stock, I pulled her from a 1992 Mustang 5.0 HO w/AOD.

I can't afford a rebuild or big delay on project and want to get the right gear and distributor. Current part is Accel 9207, Mr. Gasket said that it's no longer made, they said to us Accel 71201E.

I just need to know FOR SURE!

The engine will have a roller cam. The Mustangs have had roller cams in the 5.0's since 1985.

Default dist. gear

Thank you for the confirmation.

I quess the Accel dist.was not the correct one. I hope the new Accel 71201E is correct. They said it was, but they mess up on the first one also!

Steel !

Thanks

I hope it works out better than the first one. Probably wouldn't hurt to change the oil and filter to, to get rid of those metal particles from the old gear.

If it's a stock cam I would put a bronze gear on it.

NO!!!!!

A bronze gear will live max of 10K miles. Screw that.

It's a roller cam, you need a STEEL gear. NOTHING else.
