Default Getting a Supercharger.

I am planning on buying a powerdyne silent drive supercharger for my 91 GT 5.0. I know I should probably rebuild the engine first, so does anyone have any advice on how I should do that(i.e. brand and type of pistons, rings, rods, etc.)? I am planning on putting 9p.s.i. of boost on my engine. Also, will I need to change the injectors, intake, or anything like that? Thanks for any help.

Well, how much money do you want to spend? That will generally point you in the direction you go. You can do a rebuild and buy the best of everything, or buy only what you need. Running 9lbs of boost, you won't have to go overboard with a rebuild.

Default supercharger

I found a Powedyne silent drive kit for $3000, and I really don't want to put more than $1000 extra into my engine, because I just can't afford it. And me car is a daily driver.

Ok, what kind of miles are on the engine......more than 100k? If it were mine and the compression was down on a few cylinders, or it's using oil, I'd go ahead and freshen it up.

The kind of power your looking at, all of the stock components will work. I used a stock crank (shot peened and chamfered) on my last setup and it made 500hp with a set of aftermarket rods and pistons. If it's all prepped right, it will last.

If moneys tight, and it will be after you start buying parts to go with the blower, just give it a ring and bearing job. Addtionally you can have the rods reconditioned with a larger rod bolt and have the crank turned or polished. Again, the money available will dictate what you do.

As far as your blower kit is concerned, does it come with everything?( fuel pump, fmu, wiring, etc) If an FMU is used, you can get buy without a larger injector, but a some point in time I'd upgrade to a larger set with a matching MAF and ditch the FMU. An aftermarket intake will always help, as will a larger TB and EGR.

On a side note, I'm not sure what kit your pricing, or which model it is, but it seems a little on the high side. My buddy just bought a Vortech SQ for 2700 to his door. It's pretty damn quiet, and in my opinion, an much better blower for the money. Just my 2 cents

Hey Willie, nice car. I noticed your using a Dart block and was wondering if your running a hydraulic or solid lifter cam? My block is sitting in the garage waiting to go to the mahine shop and I was curious how much machining was needed on yours.

What's wrong with Powerdyne? They make great hp and are reliable at that. Stealthy too. I love mine no problems at all with it. In fact I am running 18psi of boost on it!

THE DIFFERENCE FROM A POWERDYNE AND A VORTECH IS ABOUT 80HP MY POWERDYNE SET HAD 18 PSI PUSH 505 RWHP AND MY 95 MUSTANG RAN 11.80 AT 123MPH ON DRAG RADIAL AND MY VORTECH S TRIM SET AT 15PSI PUSH 585 RWHP AND RAN 11.13 AT 130MPH ON THE SAME SET UP NO MY VORTECH T TRIM SET AT 15PSI PUSH RWHP 666 AND RUNS 11.03 AT 133MPH WITH TRACTION PROBLEMS NOT SAYING THE POWERDYNE IS A BAD SUPERCHARGER BUT FOR THE MONEY YOU'RE GOING TO SPEND ON A POWERDYNE GET A VORTECH AND I'LL GUARANTEE E PRETTY BIG HORSEPOWER DIFFERENCE.

Hands down Vortec is better but for the money Powerdyne works great. I have mine intercooled which give you a whole lot more hp per pound of boost compared to non-intercooled. If I had the money at the time a Powerdyne would not of been on my car unless it was the gear driven one.

I know I'm late to this thread but here's my two cents. A BD-11A Powerdyne is an entry level 800cfm supercharger. It's not meant for boost over 9psi though it looks like a few of you are/were running way beyond that which is awesome. Perhaps upgrading the internal belt/bearings is a good upgrade for longevity. Regardless, it's not in the same league as a 1000cfm/20psi Vortech S-trim. If you want a Powerdyne that can compete with the likes of an S-trim, they do offer the gear driven XB-1. Its capable of 1200cfm/18psi. I used one on my old 1995 Mustang GTS. It had all the bolt-ons (Cobra intake, GT-40 heads, exhaust, Steeda cam, etc) and made 446rwhp/417rwtq SAE(@5800rpm due to spark blowout) untuned. The new owner is having it tuned with the appropriate injectors and I bet will make 470-480rwhp. That's with the XB-1's 9lb pulley, 7" crank pulley, and powerpipe. Thing is, I never came close to pushing the limits of the XB-1 or even coming close to its potential. What's my point? Do it right the first time becuase in the end, you're going to want more boost, gauranteed. You're going to hit the limits of the BD-11A real quick but with an S-trim, XB-1, Novi 2000, etc, they will the ones that will give you room to grow when the need for more boost arrives. Good luck.

I have the same amount of boost u r talking about & I left everything stock. o`yea by the way the main thing u wanta do is make sure the chip is done right or u`ll have all kinds of air & fuel & spark probs. mine ran so good that I gotta watch the rpm guage instead of the speedometer. It`s so fast it`s scary. It`s at 150mph & it just wants 2 keep on going & going.
