Default 2.3 turbos?

I know this question should be in Small Ponies but this forum gets alot more traffic...

Can I take the turbo assembly off an 83 capri 2.3 RS turbo and bolt it directly on to my 87 LX 2.3 or would I have to make modifications to the wiring harnes and use the 83 computer, If I did use the 83 computer would it be compatable with the 87 EFI engine? thanks for any help in this matter.

Take the turbo and bolt it to the 5.0, no wait, get the turbo, put it in a box and send it to me. I'll pay shipping....

will the 2.3L turbo work with a 5.0L engine?
if it does could one use two of them? (hehe twin turbo?)

I think a turbo 2.3L would be kinda cool. I mean I'd probably go with 5.0L, but it would be pretty cool.

I thought it would be neat to have something a little different.

but I still need to know if the turbo will bolt directly on or do I also need the computer, thankx again

I as well would like to know the answer to this It would be interesting to strip a turbo out and slap it on my 5.0. Though the conversion process Id like to know more of about first.

A couple years ago I had a customer with an '83 T-bird turbo, and he thought he blew the engine, so he got another t-bird turbo engine from an '87, and had me do the install.

The hardest part was all the sensors had different types of connectors, but with a little patience, in worked great. Even passed smog the first time out (that shocked me).

If you are puting a turbo into a non turbo car, you need the turbo ECM, wiring harness, and sensors. They have different values (your vacuum doesn't do the ECM much good with boost!).

From there, it's pretty straight forward.

is it a stock 2.3L? if so yeah you can put the turbo on it and have someone waiting to pick the pistons up out of the road when you leave your driveway...a stock 2.3L will not hold the boost I have one and wanted to do a turbo swap..but you cant..unless you have a turbo ready motor if your serious about a powerful small pony I know where you can buy a running turbo motor that all you have to do is put forged pistons in it and bolt on the turbo for 500 bucks...lemme know if you are interested

I've got to disagree on this one. Your talking going from 8.0:1 to 9.0:1, with a turbo that might make 6 pounds of boost at it's very best.

Run 93 octane, and you'll be fine with 9:1 pistons.

it depends on the turbo my '86 svo made 16# of boost stock and those motors are forged throughout putting that turbo on a stock 2.3 would probably spell trouble but the 2.3 is pretty darn tuff i've had buddies put huge shots of nitrous on a 2.3 stang just trying to blow it up and even after melting half the plugs because it was lean it ran fine after replacing the plugs.

Bro, I love ya like a brother, and I'm not trying to be a jerk, but there is no way in hell that a stock turbo in a SVO Mustang put out 16 pounds of boost. The fatory gauge may have said that, but they are the worst, most innacurate gauge Ford has ever used. The t-bird guy I mentioned before said his hit 12-14 pounds "all the time", and I drove it, and it did say that. When I hooked up a simple Sunpro boost gauge, however, it never went past 6, and even that was rare. 5 was more like it.

I know it sounds like alot of boost but here is an article about the svo stangs look specifically at the second paragraph under technoligical innovations the svo stangs made hella boost.

There was a guy in Hot rod a while ago that was using 2.3 turbo's and putting them in a Pinto and running 9's and the best part was since the turbo blocks were cast in Brazil, it qualified for the Import drags

Yup the 2.3 turbo has a totally different and quite beefy short block assy. If you got a cheap turbo setup from a similar year mustang (150 hp??) it may last for a little while.

A much more sensibile approach is to get a T-bird turbo coupe, Merkur or SVO turbo motor and swap the whole thing into your stang. The higher output (205 hp??) would be more desirable over the 150 hp version

That's unreal! Thanks for the link! My experience with 2.3 turbos is limited to t-birds and Merkurs, and their boost gauges were very inaccurate, but I guess the SVO Mustang did things differently.

I went to a junkyard today, for few small parts. I looked at a SVO turbo motor complete all in tact. He even has the car.

PKR i have to disagree with having to change out all the electronics. I have bolted on the 2.3 system on mass air cars and all i did for fuel enrichment was to put an FMU on it worked like a champ to #4 don't know how much more boost it will take that way though the guy wanted a nice reliable streat driver.
