Twin Turbos?
I have a 96 Cobra, and I'm considering getting the Incon twin turbo kit when it comes out this summer. The turbos, they say, give more horsepower with less strain due to them not pulling on the motor. This is coming from the guy trying to sell them. ANY thoughts or information would be very appreciated. Also any that have installed superchargers on theirs, how are the results?

The disadvantage of supercharging is that you have to use engine power to turn the supercharger, so you have to use power to make power, and therefore aren't as efficient as a turbo. The advantage is that since the supercharger turns proportionally to the engine the boost is very linear and predictable. A good supercharged engine just feels like a very big powerful engine.
The advantage of a turbo is that the turbos are being turned by the exhaulst are just using energy that would otherwise just be wasted. The disadvantage of turbos is the exhaulst being used to spin the turbos is very hot and as a result the compressed air coming into your engine is very hot. That's why pretty much every turbo is intercooled, while some superchargers are, but most aren't. Turbos also require a lot more complicated plumbing. The intake tube has to come from some where were it can get nice clean air, run down to the exhault where the turbos are, through an intercooler, and into the engine. They are also much more expensive and heavier then a supercharger. Also since the turbos don't spin in preportion to the engine they can lag and have sort of unlinear rubber band effect. Its easy to tell when you are riding in a turbo. Basically either one can make you a bunch of power, but the cost and drivability will be effected differently. |
