Default Slow '95 GT

My '95 GT auto drives like it has a slipping box. Compared with my boyfriends '89 firebird it's a real hog, (this is a major embarrassment). I've been advised by the local garage that a shift kit will make all the difference in the world. Before I go ahead and have the work done I'd like to hear other owner's opinions. Has anyone else found it to make a difference? Are the stock cars really this slow? Would a diff' upgrade be a better idea? Any advice would be greatly received.

a shift kit and a set of 373 or 410 gears would wake it up.they are pretty slow stock.

Thanks! Considering that I am on a budget, which upgrade alone offers the biggest gain, (shift kit or gears)?

well the shift kit is prolly less than
100 plus fluid and the gears are like 190 plus new crush sleve, pinion seal, rtv.its not a bad idea to have new clutchs for the limited slip(posi)..now its about who u know that can install them.if u dont know any one that can do it will cost some money.
