Default new rear end

hello-

ok I have an interesting chance to do something to my mustang.

as you guys know I have been trying to find out what rear end I have. and thanks to your help I have. but now no body has the part I need. so I am just going to upgrade the rear end now. I am going to buy A used 8 inch rear end. 2 different places said they would sell me on for around 300. is that A good price.

and since I am going to do that. I thought this would be A good chance for me to really look into dropping A V8 in. but not sure if I can get anough money saved up before the end of the summer(I am still in high school). so my question is if I went ahead and putt in the 8 inch rear end and hooked it up to my I6 now. later on when I get the money could I attache A V8 to the same rear end. I know there will be other changes when I convert to A 8 cyl. but right now I am just woundering if I could get the rear end and drive it till I save money to do the whole swap. but I don't want to have to buy two rear ends.

Find the 8" rear or order an equivalent from a drive train specialist shop. Get V8 GT leaf springs (4 leaf) and shackle kits. Install the leaf springs and shakle kits. You'll swap the rears as you reassemble. Install the driveshaft. If the universal won't fit, then take your driveshaft to a drive shaft specialist and have the rear yoke changed to fit V8 universal parts. When done, the driveshaft should have 7/8" to 1" travel at the transmission slip yoke. Drive until you're ready for your V* swap. When doing this you can pick any rear ratio you want but the best will likely be 3:00 or 3:25 for your situation.

To bad your not in Michigan I've got about a dozen 8 inch ford rears that I can't seem to give away.

"really" seems like people should be taking em off your hands like that especially for free. well I just lost my job. the store decided to close. so looks like it will be alitle bit longer then I thought before I get my stang on the road.

I don't know your area or the reputation of your businesses. What I can say is there are several here in Oklahoma City that can do as good a job as anyone in the county. The shops here are used mostly by the trucking industry however they do light duty axles too. The one I use is a Dana distributor and I can get Richmond Gear, Auburn Gear and TracTech (Detroit Locker) components installed for any 8", 8.8" or 9" Ford as well as popular GM rear axles. Don't know about Mopar support but I think they do those too. Look in your Yellow Pages and then check out the businesses. If they look clean and professional chances are they are. If they look fly-by-night they usually are but every successful small business starts somewhere.

J&M Stang......


How much for one of your rear ends? If the price is right, I'll pay shipping to Sacramento.



I dont know much about the whole rear end deal, but I know this.
The six cylinder Mustang has a 7.5 inch rear end, and thats no good for v8.
I'm guessing that the 8 inch rear is alrighty tighty for V8, supposing I'm not making a drag racer, but a daily driver.

yea I am not making A drag racer. all my dad is going to let me do is put A stock 289 in with A couple of mods. like exhaust and K&N air filter and litle stuff like that.

Fordkid68, My son and I are replacing his 8" non posi rear end with a 9" posi..Once we get the 9" in and running we will be selling the 8"..if your interested in buying it e-mail us..We live in Santa Rosa and could drop it off in Sacramento in a few weeks...It is in perfect condition and has 2.35 gears.

tfish- sorry my email is messed up right now so I have to use the board.


so how much you selling it for. and will that include the leafsprings. cuz if not then I am going to just buy A donnor car and swap the whole work and do A V8 conversion.

dont pay $300 for am 8in. ... 67-70 should work... I think the 6 cyl cars in 69 and 70 had the 8in too...

Dark Knight- thanks since you mention not paying 300 I called A couple of other places and found them for around 100 to 125.

that sure beats 300.

Personally if I was going to buy a rear end I would buy a 9 inch. It will handle all the horsepower a v8 can kick out nomatter what you dom to the engine...

the reason I am not going with A 9inch rear end is cuz of the money. A 9 inch is alot more then A 8 inch. and I am still in high school. and my dad has allready put A 250HP limit at the flywheel. so an 8inch should have no problem handling that.

Hi I am a new member here. I just have a question about swapping my diff. I have a 1994 mustang with a 7.5" diff. I bought a 8.8" diff out of a 87 turbo coupe. Now I went to put the diff in and noticed my 5 bolt axles out of my car were longer than the axles in the turbo coupe thus not sealing properly and not being able to bolt my brakes on. I was wondering were I can get 5 bolt axles the same length as the 87 turbo coupe so that my brakes can fit. I hope someone has a solution otherwise I have to sell my freshly painted diff with new bushing's and seals. Greatlly appreciated.
