Question No mufflers good or bad?

I blew some holes in my mufflers the other day. And I could not come up with the 400 bucks for the new ones. So I cut them out and put straight pipes in> Will this damage my engine at all? Please let me know ASAP so I do not kill my engine.

Thanks, Bri

Default No mufflers

Are you still running the factory exhaust with cats? If so, then I'd think you'd be ok until you can come up with the $$ to get mufflers. The motor does need "some" backpressure to run good. Though some may disagree with that, depending on how modded your motor is? But I doubt you are running straight pipes with no cats or mufflers. I'd imagine that would get you pulled over real quick!

No, running with no mufflers will not damage your engine, the only thing that would damage your engine is to run no exhaust at all, not even headers, that would cause your valves to warp, but me and all my mustang colleges run open headers, and have been for several years

as long as your running the cats that is plenty..thing is with just running headers and nohting else you have to try to keep from making your engine do the braking..more so in colder weather..just imagin your valves seeing fire like temps then seeing 50deg in less than a sec..sound liek they would last long?

Thanks a bunch guys. I was able to run by a Mustang performance shop today and he told me it was fine. I then asked him about more tunning on my car and he told me to get a real blower if i want to make some real hp. I was kinda pissed I think my car does pretty well if you ask me. He is a dealer for vortec. And he said Powerdynes are crap

Yeah, i'd have to say your car makes a "fair" amount of power ......if that's fair, i'd like to see what "good" is....jesus.

Anyways, as long as you have something directing the exhaust out from underneath your car, like turndowns where the mufflers were or tailpipes, i can't think of any problems you'd have. If you had the exhaust pointed at the rear axle without a turndown or tailpipe, you could boil the gear oil and/or gas tank and lines.

It wont hurt your engine, but no mufflers isnt the best for power... Check out the December 2002 5.0 Mustangs and Super Fords Magazine. They have a big muffler test with like 15-20 different mufflers and all of them made more power then open headered car.

408rwhp is nothing to sneeze at!!! Ghes I wish I had that kinda of power!! I have heard people say that Powerdynes are not the best. Something about the internal belt slipping, and parts not holding up well under load, but I don't know first hand.

I think it comes down to how much you can spend, but vortech and now paxton(owned by vortech) are definately made with high quality stuff. I wish I had 400+RWHP too!

I agree you are making good power with what you got. Powerdyne's have come a long way in their progress. They have no more internal belt problems. It's a good blower none the less.

I love my Powerdyne. It is so quite and puts out a lot of hp. Needles to say I do believe some more ponies can be pushed out of my combo, still searchingh for them. I have lost some trq but the power above 3500 is the same and it sounds AWSOME too!
