![]() Hello, I just purchased my 1st Mustang, a 2001 Cobra Conv. I called a recommended shop in Maryland to get a price for a 3.73 installation. I was told that to change to 3.73, a new chip must also be purchased for the speedo change. Has anyone ever heard of this? Need some help, new to this.

![]() I've heard that you don't need a chip for this swap. There's supposed to be two different fix's for this. I'm actually on here looking for the original post myself because I just had 4.30's put in the '99.

![]() You will need either a chip or a speed cal to adjust your speedometer. That should be the only reason that you will need it.
Why are going to 3.73's? I say go with 4.30's. I went to 4.10's, but 4.30's would be better!! Jeff

![]() The shop I spoke with told me the only thing I could do was get the chip, I asked if there was anything else to use to calibrate the speedo, but they said no. The price to do this is now rising another $300, plus the price f the 3.73 change. We are talking close to $1000 total!!! I was also going to add a K&N, Steeda shifter and pully's, and possibly Bassani x pipes, but now I have to make some choices, can't afford all.
The reason for the3.73, is that I do some highway driving and I was told that the 4.10s or higher would not be wise. Let me know your feelings on this please. Thanks for the replies. |

![]() If you don't mind me asking, what shop in Maryland and what part of Maryland do you live in?
I have a Ford mechanic that deals specifically with drivetrain repairs/upgrades...I might be able to hook you up.

![]() I also do alot of highway driving. The 4.10's do not bother me on the freeway at about 70 I am still under 3000 rpm's. My fifth gear is actually usable now I can pass people now problem in fifth. With 3.27's I couldn't pass nothing without gearing down.
A $1000 is way to high to put gears in a car. It should cost about 500-600. Check this out about recalibrating you speedometer. http://www.dallasmustang.com/earlyspecials.htm Hope this helps!! Don't let this shop screw you out of money. Go somewhere else.

![]() Red Mustang, What shop do you recommend in the Maryland area? I would love to get another price and opinion. It seems there are not a lot of shops that I can find that even do this kind of work at all.
Thanks |

![]() I can't recommend any shops (never use them) but I'm going to check with my friend who does driveline work for Ford. From Columbia, it's about a 30 minute ride to my friends garage (east side of Md)...he is reputable and guarantee's his work. Give me a day or two, I'll get back to you.

![]() I replied to this both places you posted I completely understand not wanting to spend that kinda cash to fix one problem.
- The SpeedCal will correct the calibration issue for your new gears. - The MIL Eliminators are going to be necessary if you're adding an off road X-Pipe to your new car. This will shut off the annoying check engine light. However, I see the issue of warranty popping up numerous times in here. If this is important to you, which I'm sure it is, then I would suggest a simple computer chip. Superchips Computer Chips WILL NOT void your warranty. I don't care what the dealership told Joe Blow's sister or what they told that man down by the river...It can NOT and will NOT void your warranty through Ford. ![]() Not only will it correct those two issues it will also add approx. 22hp to the vehicle. ![]() ![]() I've had hands on with all of these products at work and have seen what comes back from the public. The Superchips (by far) has been one of the best products (next to the EEC Tuner) I've seen. I just got off a project talking to other S.C. dealers and heard nothing but rave reviews too. Whatever you choose, good luck...There's nothing worse than wasting good mod money. ![]()
