Question 300-400 rwhp on stock tranny/clutch???

I'm just wondering.......I'm not there yet (400 that is), I figure I'm around 310 now. I'm thinking of spraying 125-150 horses and I'm not sure what tranny/clutch set up I'd need. Right now I'm still running te stock tranny and stock clutch. I don't run it hard too often. I'm thinking the Tremec TKO and Centerforce DF would be overkill. What do you guys think/recommend? (the reason I'm asking is I could always use that extra $$$ saved on something else. Thanks for your $.02!

Pay me now or pay me later...

I dunno, I broke my T5 with 330rwhp (NOT drag racing, but roadracing) pretty quick. Like within 18K miles.

Went with a TKO and never looked back...

Thanks Darius. But you don't think the TKO is overkill.....would I be ok w/ a 3550 or even a heavier duty T5? How about clutches....would a King Cobra handle up to 400rwhp?

I have no personal experience with this, but I've been told that the 3550 is only slightly stronger than the stock T-5. The TKO is supposedly much stronger. Besides, the price difference between the 3550 and the TKO is nominal. If you go with Tremmec, just get the TKO because most of the cost is in installation anyhow.

If you are going up to 400 ponys, get the TKO. It's rated up to 525 ft/bls of torque. The T5 is only up to 320. The 3550 is just a little bit stronger then the T5 but not my much.

I would go with the RAM 900. It holds up to 500hp.

The 3550, and TKO are the same except for the input and output shaft. That alone makes the 3550 much stronger then the t5 because most people break internals on the t5's. The 3550 is underated IMO. Take this for what it is worth, but I ran low 11's w/ slicks using a 3550 and a centerforce clutch all day long.

Also, if you get a TKO you will have to get a new crossmember, yoke for the drive shaft, and bell houseing. There are few companies that make clutches specifically for the TKO. But the ones that do, are good.

Look... the stock clutch doesn't even hold up to the stock 225hp with slicks for too long. You'll just destroy the stock clutch with 300+rwhp. 400rwhp, you should def. get a TKO and a CF dual friction. 300+rwhp you might be ok with a T-5, but not for long. If your thinking about spraying get a CF DF clutch. IMO the king cobra won't stand a chance against 400rwhp.

If it's not obvious, haven't made too many passes w/ slicks w/ my stoc tranny and clutch. It's still in good shape actually, but I'm planning on running DR's on the street, full time (again).....ad w/ the added hp/tq, I think I'd rather sell my tranny before it goes pop. What is a used tranny in good condition w/ 12k on it worth?

You don't need to replace your T-5, it don't matter they all break, I've ran over 170 passes on my 93 T-5 at the track with a basic motorsport clutch, 91 of those passes were on a 150 shot out of the hole on spray and slicks.

Tremecs slow you down too, ask Bob Cosby.

Why would a tremec slow you down? Are they alot heavier than the t5?

I run 11.19@124 with a World Class T-5 Z7003 and have not had a problem. I run slicks and launch off of a MSD 2 step at 4600 rpm's and it has pulled 1.60 60 ft times. I have a Motorsports SVO 10.5 clutch. I have raced these parts for 2 years with no problems. Just my .02 cents
